  • Jans & Heiar mentioned about replacement at WKU

Over on hilltopperhaven.com which is a Western Kentucky board, they're talking about possibly Coach Jans and Coach Heiar being options for their next head coach. Just thought it was interesting. I hope we don't lose either of them, they're great coaches.

I hope one of them is hired. If assistants see this job as a launching pad to HC jobs, then more good assistants will come.

We don't want to lose either of these guys, I would hope that Jans would be Marshall's replacement when the time comes and Heir his assistant.

I like Greg Heir a lot but he's not ready to be a head coach. Chris Jans on the other hand is ready and I expected him to be gone last season. With a strong February and March, he will be this year and I would be very happy for him, and sad for WSU and Wichita. Jans and his family are good people and keepers.

If he goes, he can always come back if the HC position opens up.

This is not surprising as both are very respected. I hope we are able to keep the staff together. Chris Jans will be a serious canidate for H.C with us if we every lose Coach Marshall as will Greg Heiar if we don't need a new coach for several more years.

WKU interest in Jans and Heiar is just fan talk so far. Assistant coach Ray Haper is serving as interim coach at WKU and will probably be a strong candidate to keep the job. I'm not aware of any other names being connected for the job at the present time as a national search will be conducted. WKU is a pretty nice job.

I would fire Marshall to keep Jans and I'm not even kidding! Jans does all the coaching and dirty work as it is now and there is a reason he has been given the "Associate" title. We need to keep this guy at all costs. Anyone that thinks we took a huge step back when Boyle left Turg... Well this would be much worse imo. I believe Basketball Times had a big piece about assistants that were ready for HC jobs and Jans was #1 on their list with Heiar down around 6 or 7 if I recall correctly. I concur with the above poster that Heiar isn't ready for a HC job yet but that is based of his time here at WSU and its obvious he either needs a little more time or he is playing it cool and not overstepping his bounds as the new guy on staff.

Well, if the Valley continues to be a jumping pad for BCS jobs, the best course of action for WSU would be to keep a coaching tree going from Marshall, and we get Jans as our next coach if Marshall leaves us. I would also be thrilled to see Heiar stay on for as long as Jans would be here, and if Jans moves up to a BCS school, we pick Heiar up.

Marshall's assistants, including Dana Ford are some of the best, young assistants in the country.

No doubt things will get interesting with the coaching carousel in the off-season.

South Carolina is off to an 8-9 start and are 0-3 in SEC play although they have played @Kentucky and home against Vanderbilt and Florida so far. There current RPI is 188.

RealTimeRPI.com projects them to finish at 12-18 (4-12 in the SEC) with a 165 RPI.

I don't know squat about Jans, other than I what I hear reported about here. Nothing. Is he ready for a WSU caliber team? A team that recently has been to the Sweet-16 and won the NIT last year? A team that is _finally_ going to win the conference tournament this year? Is he ready for all of that? Can he recruit his butt off (not just players but way more importantly, other coaches)? A team on the cusp of being a perennial NCAA tourney team?

I know I am firing all of these questions at you but I really want to know if he's at THAT level. I know he rocked it at JUCO, but that's all I really know. Seems like a big difference bringing in a 7 time NCAA coach versus an "unproven" assistant, but I'll go with the guys in the know on this one.

I could live with that and that is not out of the realm of possibility. (I base that primarily on John Kresse being 3G's mentor and role model).

There is a reason why assistant coaches don't leave high profile jobs...money and ego. WSU pays its asst coaches well enough that alot of head coaching jobs they would have to take a cut in pay. However there is the ego thing and wanting to run your own program. To go to a smaller program even as its head coach would still be a large undertaking in recruiting and getting your own assistants. If Coach Jans is on the same level as Tad Boyle then it would be nice if we could keep him because I agree that our program took several steps backwards when he left.
