  • EVEN though...

Even though Creighton escaped with a win, this appeared to be a very physical game. People can talk about how physical the other state schools play, but i've never seen players struggling to walk and run up the court like I did in this one. I thought the announcers did a good job calling the game, despite the fact they were drooling over Creighton's shooters, they were fully aware that this one was a slug fest. I think WSU matches up well with Creighton this year. We would of have won had we fetched the guards from Old Town at half time so they could actually be a factor. If just one of those guys I.E. Ragland, Murry, Kyles would of joined the Carl Hall effort, WSU would of won this game. This might be one of the roughest WSU teams we've seen in awhile though. From what i've seen so far this year, weak MVC teams will lose to them by 40, good MVC teams might get a win, but will be licking their wounds after the win. Should be a good year. Carl Hall is on another level of physical play.

I've said since last year that CU would be really good if not great this year. Nothing I've seen has changed that opinion.

I still won't be surprised if they run the table to the NCAAs. They're outstanding. We can beat them, but they're outstanding.

I promise you 90-51 won't be the worst beating in conference this year...not by a long shot. SIU or someone will lay down and the Jays bench will go on a 3 point barrage and it will be a 110-40 type score.

Unfortunately, they will be even better next year. They only lose Young, and Chatman is more than capable of filling in.

        They'll be ridonkulous next season.

It was a very physical game. Actually, one of the most physical I've seen in quite a while. No question that Whitehead, Olson & Eades, definitely "let em play."

On that note, Eades did not have his best game. Whitehead & Olson were very consistent throughout.

It was a game where the weight room obviously came into play.

And I would agree they 'let em play' a bit too much. That said, as a player you have to adjust to the manner in which it is called.

CU has a smart group of veteran players. They recognized during halftime how it was going to be called and they adjusted.

Consequently, they went out and executed.

WSU didn't adjust and made one bad decision after another.

You witnessed the result (and yes, even after a couple of days, this one still urinates me off).
Above all, make the right call.

              Nope, just a junior.

Fortunately, we have our own Gibbs that will be ready.....more than ready.

That was the first time I watched Creighton play this Season. Yes indeed they are solid and an improved squad. When we had a decent lead at the half, I was not comfortable at all. This was not a floor game for the weak of heart. It was down right physical in there The jays will take a solid full game to beat and I think we do just that if we establish an inside presence. We are both 1-1 and both have other concerns with playing 1 game at a time. When the dust clears at the end, both teams should be right there at the top. People speak of up to 4 Valley teams getting to the Dance? If we get 2 in total, it will be an improvement.

I've said this before, but if I have to be subjected to that type of play and that type of officiating, I'll just stay home. That was not basketball. The "let 'em play" mantra is ok, but that was horseshit. I presume ESPN mandates that style of play, (which is also horseshit). I agree with SR about consistancy, cause the refs sucked throughout. The gray-haired guy should not be working at any level. I watch Jr. High basketball regularly, and that guy could not get a job working in southern Kansas at the 7th grade level. Dunno if we woulda won the game if they had called fouls, but maybe. Who knows? ............oh, btw, I don't watch UFC either.......

Hey guys, first post, but I wanted to drop in and give my observations.

If there is any question who the two best teams in the MVC are, there shouldn't be now. After the egg we laid against MSU, I didn't think there was any chance we could walk into the Roundhouse and take one.

I agree with the observations already made in this thread. This was an EXTREMELY physical game and despite some questionable no-calls going both ways, I am really glad the officiating crew let the teams play. Too often, we find ourselves complaining about the exact opposite and typically MVC games are called too "ticky-tacky." The battles between McD, Gibbs, and Echenique with Hall, Stutz, and Smith were terrific, and with this being an early showcase game among the two premier teams in the league, I am glad this happened.

Hall is an absolute BEAST. He is by far the most aggressive, blue-collar type player I have seen this year and did a fantastic job against our interior.

I am really looking forward to the rest of the season. I am sure each team will have a few slip-up games (nature of the MVC) along the way, but I am confident that come March, these will be your last two standing teams and hopefully square off in the conference championship. I know there has always been bickering back-and-forth about CU-WSU and some denial about this being a rivalry and that is complete BS. This is the best rivalry in the MVC right now and the rest of the programs better get used to it, because it will be going forward for quite some time.

Best of luck the rest of the way!

But.. but.. the KU fan on Eagle sports replies said it looked like a pillow fight. Heh heh

No wonder UNI kicked their a*ses.

Physical game. Stutz was found wanting. Coach will cook up something for the rematch.

                          Solid post!

I agree 100% ... "let 'em play" has been missing from this conference for way too long and was very welcome.

WSU was definitely not "soft" as far as physical play goes, but our brains sure were mushy in the second half. That was our crappiest half since the Puerto Rico tourney and it came at exactly the wrong time.

I cannot wait for the return trip -- it should be a great game!

I've spoken plenty about all the things I liked about the Shockers in other threads, but now I'll state where I was most disappointed. I was disappointed that either Stutz couldn't handle Greg E one-on-one, or that we didn't double. We should have doubled like everyone else. Second...Murry. Third, Ragland's defense. I have a lot of respect for Young, but I honestly thought Ragland was better. Young made Rags look bad.

I felt going in that we matched up well against Creighton but the truth is that the Bluejays played better team basketball and beat our match-up at 3 positions with the SGs basically being a "draw."

I was more than fine with the officiating. Is there a chance that the MVC is changing the way they want the officials to call the games? I haven't seen a physical game like that in the MVC in quite a while.
