With all the uncertainty of athletic teams and fiscal security I would think it prudent to take a wait and see approach to adding sports at this time. We have 16 which is the minimum number to remain a division one school.. I would rather we stand pat than be like FORMER AAC member ugone and perhaps cutting up to eight sports to try and become solvent.

Actually, WSU has 15 sports. 7 Men's (Baseball, Basketball, XC, Indoor T&F, Outdoor T&F, Tennis and Golf) and 8 Women's (Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, XC, Indoor T&F, Outdoor T&F, Tennis and Golf).

D-I requires at least 14 sports: seven for men and seven for women, or six for men and eight for women.

So Wichita State could either drop one of its men's sports OR one of its women's sports and still be in compliance.

I agree that this is not the time to add any sports that do not turn a profit. We might want to take an honest look at our sports and see if perhaps replacing some programs would make sense from both a competitive standpoint and a net revenue standpoint. Our golf programs have not been very competitive since joining the AAC and are trending the wrong way in that regard. Golf generates very little revenue. I would think Soccer would be a sport that WSU could build a competitive program relatively quickly and it at least has the potential to generate some decent revenues. Of course, the costs need to be analyzed as well to see the net profit or loss of Soccer vs Golf. Also, would adding soccer negatively impact Volleyball revenues as those sports are played in the fall.

Before we do anything we need to see how men's basketball season ticket/SASO revenues hold up post-COVID19. Depending on how this goes and/or how our share of TV/NCAA revenues go may well determine whether we add any sports, replace any sports or possibly even drop a sport. Of those 3 options adding sports is probably the least likely.to occur in the next 5 years IMO.
