  • Buyout for D1 MBB Coaches

I have been building a spreadsheet regards the MBB budgets for members of the AAC. Given the $15 million buyout Danny Manning just received due to his termination at Wake Forest, I thought Shocker Fans would be interested in how WSU has performed in this area of contract negotiations - Top 15 as of April 1, 2020 (excluding Manning):

    $60,300,000 - Kentucky (Calipari)
    $22,500,000 - Nebraska (Hoiberg)
    $22,091,667 - Oregon (Altman)
    $21,554,000 - Tennessee (Barnes)
    $20,816,667 - Texas A&M (Williams)
    $19,111,155 - Texas Tech (Beard)
    $18,613,125 - Virginia (Bennett)
    $18,300,000 - Rutgers (Pikiell)
    $16,112,000 - Kansas (Self)
    $15,400,000 - UCLA (Cronin)
    $15,000,016 - Washington (Hopkins)
    $15,000,000 - WSU (Marshall)
    $14,408,481 - Ohio State (Holtman)
    $13,700,000 - Indiana (Miller)
    $13,525,000 - Purdue (Painter)

An in-depth look at the 2020 men's college basketball coaches' salaries, compiled by USA TODAY Sports.

It's great that 76 is just trying to be informative but I'm not that naive. He's making a creative statement that is shown by his time spent doing this investigation but I'm not sure what it is. I'm personally tired of his continued attacks on our program and coach, thus my skepticism of his motives. I know he isn't one of our big donors that is concerned because if he was, he'd use other avenues than here on Shockernet. He just continually attacks. Please, either be more transparent or just stop your antics.

How is this news? Top 25 paid coach gonna have a top-25 buyout.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

I was puzzled as to why WSU lawyers would have negotiated a contract with Marshall that gave him such a powerful/superior negotiating position in future contract discussions. With little research I discovered that such buyouts were the norm, especially for a coach like Marshall who had re-established a successful MBB program for a university. Clearly I was naive and uninformed on this subject.

Then my research grew into how other members of the AAC were supporting their MBB programs and if Gonzaga had executed a financial plan to ensure they were one of the dominant MBB programs in the West Region of the Big Dance. I haven't drawn any conclusions yet other than Gonzaga has clearly dedicated much larger sums to their MBB program than all other schools in the West Region except UCLA ($15 million plus).

Don't know why I am responding to the name calling bully but here goes, "seriously weird" you call me; I disagree, why do you fail to see this as "a pursuit of intellectual curiosity?"

Please post links to those "...continued attacks on our program and coach"; I think you will discover that

                    (1) I have posted my opinion that I have had my fill of Marshall and hope/pray that he retires at age 60 as he has publicly stated he intends to do.

                    (2) I have posted my opinion WSU will finish no higher than third in the AAC, will not win the AAC Tournament or establish a winning record against Kelvin Sampson and Cincinnati with Marshall as the HC.

Your post further convinces me that some posters on Shockernet prefer to ignore facts while exhibiting a willingness to attack a poster who has a different opinion than their own.

Perhaps it was 3G’s lawyers that had the negotiating advantage.

I think you are correct; Marshall's lawyer(s) cleverly took advantage of WSU's success in D1 MBB and positioned Marshall for great compensation in the future regardless of his maintaining a successful D1 MBB program.

I'm just talking for me, but I wouldn't give John Wooden himself that much job security.
