  • UNLV Game: Abberation or The Real Deal

Will the UNLV game prove to be an aberration or the beginning of a season of superlative play?

My guess is a little bit of both. I just find it hard to believe that we shoot the ball that well in very many, if any, remaining games.

OTOH, the guys may have figured out what it takes to play winning basketball.

    Points of Promise:

    1. Joe has found his stroke. Sure don't expect him to shoot like that all the time but he certainly has given opponents something else to think about with his 11-13 3-pt shooting over the last two games. 3G has always said he kills it in practice. Hopefully, we will continue to see solid shooting from Joe.

    2. Carl seems to be finding his way offensively after struggling in PR (5-18 FG). In that last 3 games Carl is a sizzling 18-23 (78.3%) from the field.

    3. Toure and David seem to be two talented seniors who are finally comfortable in their skins and willing and able to do many things to help this team win.

    4. Garrett still struggling some with fouls but how many MVC teams will be able to match up with Garrett/EO and Carl. And it's not like we are playing poorly when we go small. Garrett will have his ups and downs but he is also drawing a lot of attention from opposing defenses which opens up the floor to our other very capable weapons.

    5. When this team puts their minds to it they can plays some very nice defense which will allow them to win some games when the shots may not be falling so readily. Tekele Cotton has been a big surprise in this regard and he certainly doesn't hurt us on the offensive end either. I would have be very comfortable with Tekele getting more minutes than he did against UNLV. He should be a very effective player in MVC play.

    6. 6 turnovers (1 an offensive foul) in a fairly fast-paced high possession game is simply outstanding. If we can keep turnovers to twice that amount in most games we're in good shape.

    Some things to work on:

    1. The free throw shooting needs to become more consistent. No reason we can not be a very solid free throw shooting team.

    2. We need to make sure we don't fall too much in love with the three-ball. We need Ben to find his stroke a little and we really don't need Garrett shooting 3 treys a game. However, we do need to keep taking good shots in rhythm and knock'em down when we get 'em. We have a good power game and we have some guys that can take it to the basket. Hopefully, we will be able to keep a good balanced attack utilizing all of our weapons.

We have two upcoming games Tulsa and Utah State (especially Tulsa on the road) to prove we have found our way and can take our show on the road effectively (Tulsa). Assuming we can do that then we have two games (Newman & Chicago State) to prove we can keep our play at a high level even against lesser tests and, hopefully, we can satisfy Locker Room Show caller #1 and develop our depth a little bit more.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Shocks respond to the outstanding performance vs UNLV. Let's not waste it guys.

A bit of both. This team is very good. However we played nearly a perfect game yesterday.

The percentages are probably against playing that well again. Most people will have you believe the team that lost against Temple when honestly it was the exact opposite of what happened yesterday we played one of the worse games we could be.

Playing teams like Newman and Chicago St., IMO hurts the Shox. It prohibits them from staying mentally sharp and the skill level they will be up against won't test them physically. They'll play harder in practice in preparing for these games rather the actual game itself.

The UNLV game was a great win for the team and fan base. The only negative from the game is that it might be harder for the coaching staff to lock down any other good teams for a match in CKA's atmosphere. But I'm sure they'll take the win and the task ahead....!

We have shot 20 or more 3's in 5 of our 7 games. We are in love with the 3 because we have competent shooters...in theory anyway. I just wish we would take the 3's in the rhythm of the offense more often. DK is the most guilty of this, although he has taken less out-of-rhythm shots this year than last season. I believe we all think Ben will get confidence back from deep

With as many veteran players as we have, the lull of playing Newman and Chicago State should not hurt us too much. If anything, it gives us a bit of a breather before conference play (after a critical stretch of UNLV/Tulsa/Utah St.). Bradley is also somewhat down, so they will be a small step up from Chicago State. But the very next game is Creighton at home, which should easily set the tone for how we will need to play in the MVC to win the conference. That, and the guys will be JACKED for another shot at a top 25 team in CKA.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

The Shox will probably not have that good of shooting game again in a while. It's hard to shoot that good consistently. This is a good team, should probably be undefeated if we made some better decisions against Alabama and Temple, and if we could have gotten some shots to fall.

The way we beat UNLV, probably isn't going to happen too often, but if we can use a nice inside-outside balance, play tough defense, make our open shots, and stay out of foul trouble, this team could be the real deal. At this point, it's too early to tell. We have 2 very tough games this week.

Ill take garrett struggling and still getting 13. That was a very quiet 13. Carl is a beast. And joe was amazing. That being said I see us being somewhere between. Not to say we can have our games like that again but it will be tough. I do feel alot better after yesterday going into valley play than I did on thursday.

Game after game after game in the NIT we kept asking and commenting: Can the Shox keep dominating opponents like this? Their luck is gonna run out. They can't keep winning like this.

Well .... turns out it is actually possible to sustain that level of play game after game after game.

I think after the big win against UNLV,a tough road game at Tulsa, and then a home game against Utah St. a couple of easy games before the start of Valley play could be helpful.

It will also give the new guys a lot of very needed playing time.

I have to call the UNLV game an aberration. If the Shox continue to hit 60% from the field, then I will consider the UNLV game "normal". I doubt the Shox will have another shooting game like that again this season.

While I consider it an aberration, it could be a huge factor in correcting some problems that popped up in PR, building some confidene, and understanding that they can win. The danger is that there could be some over confidence coming off of a blow out over a top-20 team. If that happens, Tulsa becomes a trap game in addition to already being a pretty tough road game.

One thing that definitely came out of the UNLV game was that opponents have to cover Ragland for 3. Last year indicates they've got to cover Kyles and Smith for 3 as well. Murry's got to be guarded a little loose, but solidly, or he'll drive to the hoop. Stutz and Hall have to be doubled. It's hard to do all that with only 5 guys on the court.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

This pretty much says it perfectly. We probably won't replicate the UNLV performance often (if at all), but it could be a game that kicks off a positive, sustainable trend in our quality of play (re: the Creighton game in Marshall's second year).

The defense the Shox played against the Rebels is NOT an aberration. They've played good to very good D all season. The offense is not an aberration either. All the Shockers have to do is run the plays, make hard cuts, make smart decisions, and play inside out (via penetration or passing). That can be done and should be expected. Shooting 60% IS an aberration. If we shoot 44% for the game, we probably win by 5-10 points against the Rebs, and that should be expected. Play a top 25 team at home and shoot moderately well, we win. Play anyone else anywhere and shoot over 35% and we're in the game till the end.

I personally expect us to play very close to as well as we did against Rebels for most of the rest of the year. If we limit turn overs and fouls, we win A LOT of games. Poor shooting and/or getting into foul trouble will spell defeat against some top 50 teams.

Probably so. However, blowing out a team like UNLV by 19 points does give you a little wiggle room to not having to be quite that good and still win.

Our strength is quality players in numbers. The opposition just can't shut one or two down and expect WSU to roll over. However, we can become our biggest enemy to shutting this quality depth down. We cannot stand around, passing station to station with the receiver of the ball waiting on the pass to arrive. We have played several games this year, some we've won, some we've lost, where we had more to do with shutting our offense down than the other team. We must bring that MTXE to each and every game. You may not always shoot well, but solid D and hard, smart work on the offense will get you Ws anyway.

Honestly speaking. I think this was a little bit of both. Ragland isn't going to score 31 a game, but the team we saw sunday was the team I was expecting to see at PR. Free throws have gotten tons upon tons better, dribble driving has been there and players have all been contributing. I'm really impressed, they played like that twice in a row. Granted against UAB they didn't have Rags on fire. And the defense has been up to my expectations all season (that I've seen). So yes, I think we're in for a fun rest of the season. GO SHOCKS!
