  • Gus Grebe

I've heard his name so often so I appreciated the update in the Eagle. https://www.kansas.com/sports/colleg...239450803.html

Does anyone know what he did after WSU and why his tenure was so short?

He went to KCMO to do the Chiefs' games.

        Loved this line:

Life is good at 100 for Grebe, although he says he did have a heart attack a few weeks back. That might land many people his age in an extended stay in a hospital, but not Grebe, who says he is β€œback up and around” and was getting ready to go out for dinner.
        Incredible.

I’d venture to say a 100 year old Gus Grebe still beats half of the ESPN college basketball play by play guys out there

Agree that was a great story on Gus. I loved listening to him on the radio as a kid. I remember listening to him when Warren Armstrong threw down some nasty dunk. Gus went nuts. Warren was on 6 ft if he was that tall.

How about the net that hung outside his press box window? Window was usually open, Gus standing and leaning out, he'd go nuts on a great play. WSU was concerned he might fall out.

And any Shocker fan who ever heard Grebe can almost certainly recite his signature call of Wichita State putting games β€œin the old deep freeze.
I actually thought of Gus's quote during the last few minutes of the UCONN game... yikes!

Yeah, I think Gus had to un-freeze a game or two during his time. Also wasn't Gus the guy who lean halfway out of the press box at Cessna Stadium during Shocker football games.

I remember driving out to Bel Aire when Gus lived there during his stay in Wichita and going up and down his street looking at all the luminarias at Christmas time. Gus had lived in New Mexico, where luminarias were a popular Christmas custom, so naturally he (and his lovely wife Mildred) didn't take long to convince their neighbors to adopt the look themselves.

Glad he's still doing well -- if anyone had the energy to make it to 100, Gus would have been the guy.

Grew-up listening to Gus do both Shocker football and basketball games - he was always entertaining!

                          Warren (Armstrong) Jabali was 6'2"
