  • Echo a lot of the thoughts on this exhibition.

There wasn't one player on the floor last night that looked uncomfortable. That hasn't always been the case in recent years.

This is a phenomenal core of players for GM to work with not only this year but the next 2 or three. The ceiling for this group THIS YEAR is very high.

If you don't feel a little giddy about this season after last nights game I don't know what would have made the difference.

    • The one interesting thing I thought about this game was that our guards were guarding tight 30-35 feet from the basket. I'm sure Gregg wanted them to get after NESU in this particular game that far out from the basket, but against better players, that is a recipe for getting beat and getting in foul trouble (both the guards and the bigs behind them).

This is true. It's also true that we haven't applied any defensive pressure at the point-of-attack since 2016. There have been a lot of times we have been playing good, solid defense, but the opposition was still comfortable. We need to make teams uncomfortable.

As coach Marshall says, "cut off the head of the snake."

I didn't notice Grant playing behind Jamariius last night. Perhaps that was possibly impacted by JB's dental issues. Perhaps the question is how do we get both Grant and Jamarius the court time the deserve. A lot of mix and matching. Grant can play both the 1 and the 2. Jamarius can play the 1 and the 3. They both will play plenty.

Now Erik's court time is at risk if he can't get his shot going although he brings a lot of other good things to the floor. But 3-10 overall and 0-4 from 3 won't be good enough and no doubt he knows that.

Bilau - Has made ENORMOUS strides since the scrimmage. Even played multiple positions. This guy is a 2" shorter version of Orukpe who can catch, pass, dribble, and hit from 3. Changing a light bulb on this guy's ceiling could induce vertigo.
I thought both DeAntoni and Josaphat made very good strides since the scrimmage and both exceeded my expectations against Northeastern State.

              • While I hate to see Jaime injured and unable to play the timing, if it is going to happen in season is about as good as it could be plus 3G might be able to make a silk purse out this situation.

Jaime is out during the weakest part of our schedule and during his absence we have some younger guys able to play and develop more than they otherwise would. Both things might pay dividends later in the year. Perhaps Jaime won't be quite as worn down by the grind by the end of the year and the younger guys will be ahead of where they otherwise might be.

That said. Get well soon Jaime. We'll definitely be better when you're back on the floor.

The really great thing about the scrimmage was that all the new guys showed up much closer to their hyperbolic potential than to any type of high floor. I got every ounce of what I hoped for (not what I expected) from Wade, Sherfield, Etienne, Gordon, and Bilau.

Dexter Dennis said he tried many tactics. Robot jokes, he discovered, got Trey Wade to laugh.

"He's the hardest person to make laugh on the team," Dennis said. "I just kept coming with it, jokes back to back, back to back."

Dennis calls Wade, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, Optimus Prime, from the "Transformers" action films.

"He's built like a big robot," Dennis said. "We kept going with the robot jokes and one of them made him laugh."

Wichita State freshman Grant Sherfield started at point guard on his 20thbirthday. He looked as if he played that spot for years.

Sherfield, sophomore Jamarius Burton and Tyson Etienne combined for 10 assists and no turnovers.

Wichita State committed seven turnovers and allowed eight offensive rebounds – a major point of frustration – in the first half.

In the second half, the Shockers committed one turnover, late in the game, on their way to outscoring Northeastern State 45-25. They did that despite going deep into the bench and rotating lineups frequently.

They also limited Northeastern State to three offensive rebounds and cleaned up most of the defensive mistakes that frustrated Marshall.

                    • The Shocks, in the 2nd half, bore a stark resemblance to one of Jay Wright's better teams, if you catch my drift...

                      • Maybe my 3 favorite takeaways last night:

                        3) I like the "way" this team plays. Entry passes, sharing the ball, getting after it, getting on the floor, general attitude.

                        2) Jo, Trey and DeAntoni are all better than I thought. Might not mean a lot today, but I bet it means a lot sometime down the road.

                        1) Sherfield and Etienne combined 7-14 from 3. Now, I don't expect them to shoot 50% from 3 all year, but 14 shots is volume, and making half of those isn't luck.

I'm thinking Ron Baker coming back into the lineup; I agree, this COULD have a silver lining!

                            4) Maybe just me, but I really enjoyed last nights atmosphere considering it was an exhibition game... there seemed to be way fewer 'time-out' promotions and much more 'time-out' 'pump up the crowd' music.

Having as much depth that this team has also makes this kind of defense possible.

Sherfield had some entry passes that were high level.
