The Shocker Volleyball team's upset of Tulsa this past Friday avoided a sweep of fall Havoc in the Heartland points for the fall sports by Tulsa.

Tulsa leads 15-3 with higher finishes in both men's and women's XC worth 6 points each and their volleyball win in Tulsa worth 3 points. The Shocker Volleyball team salvaged 3 points with their volleyball win this past Friday.

24 points are on the line for the winter sports. Men's basketball (3+3), women's basketball (3+3) and 6 points each to the higher finisher in the AAC men's and women's indoor track and field championships. Last year the Shocks won 21 of these 24 points. That's a possibility this year as well but certainly not a slam dunk.

The Shocks are picked 4th and Tulsa 10th in MBB. Shocks picked 9th in WBB, Tulsa 10th but the voting was very close.

In Indoor Track and Filed the Shocker men finished 2nd last year 30 points ahead of 5th placer Tulsa (77-47). The Shocker women finished 3rd last year 60 points ahead of 11th place Tulsa (84-24). Not sure the Shocker men will be quite as strong this year. 72 of their 77 points last year were by either seniors or Rayvon Allen who transferred to OU. The women should be pretty strong again. Only 6 of the Lady Shocks 84 points came from seniors last year (Kelsey Slawson in the shot put).

WBB and men's indoor track and field is where we look to be most vulnerable vs Tulsa.

With the Havoc in the Heartland winter points now completed Tulsa leads heading this year's competition 21-15 heading into the spring.

On the men's side Tulsa leads 12-3 with the only Shocker points coming in today's 79-57 win in men's basketball. The Shocker women lead Tulsa 12-9, Tulsa's advantage comes from Cross Country with a total of 12 points which I think is significantly overweighted and overvalued.

Their are 30 points up for grabs this Spring as follows:

Men's Tennis - 6 points - Winner of the April 1st regular season dual match in Tulsa
Men's Outdoor Track & Field - 3 points - Higher Finisher at the AAC Outdoor Championships

Women's Tennis - 6 points - Winner of the March 14th regular season dual match in Tulsa
Softball - 6 points - 2 points to the winner of each of the 3 game league series in Wichita
Women's Golf - 6 points - Higher Finisher at the AAC Championship Tournament
Women's Outdoor Track & Field - 3 points - Higher Finisher at the AAC Outdoor Championships

The Shocks need to win 18 of these 30 points for a tie. That is going to be very difficult this year.

I think both the men's and women's tennis matches will be a toss up but those may be the key to whether the Shocks can rally to win Havoc for the 3rd year in a row. Note that both of those matches are in Tulsa. Even if they win both of those matches it may be tough to pull out a win in this year's Havoc competition. About the only sure points I see for the Shockers are the 3 points for Women's Outdoor Track & Field.

I think the best, and perhaps only path to rally to win the Havoc competition, would be to win both tennis matches on the road, win 2 of the 3 softball games in Wichita plus the 3 Women's Outdoor Track & Field points. That would be a total of 19 points and give the Shockers a 34-32 win. I don't think the odds of that happening are very good.

Looks like Tulsa is declaring themselves "Havoc Champions" even though we split events 5 wins each, but because two events were weighted more they win 21 points (TU) to 15 points (WSU).

Looks like Tulsa got a little emotional over the announcement.
