  • Why are we here?

Perhaps more appropriately, why are YOU here?

I'm not talking about a soulful existence or anything that deep (at least not yet) but, specifically, why do you exist on Shockernet and more importantly, why do you come to the basketball forum?

I have some thoughts, but I want to see where we go with this first, if there is any interest.

I am here because I am a life long fan wishing consort with fellow mates without hearing, "Oh, you like WSU? KU is sooo much better. Is WSU DII or NAIA? Who was the last player WSU sent to the pros?"

Other than that, this is where I get my Shocker fix. All news WSU flows through Shockernet.

I started coming on Shockernet while spending a semester studying abroad and was suffering from a lack of Shocker sports (unfortunately for me, it was the Sweet 16 season, so I had to experience it from a distance and Shockernet was a big part of that).

I guess I'm still here for the reason any addict keeps coming back.

Because I'm married and my wife keeps my balls in her purse. So since I have very little "guy" time anymore...this provides me an outlet to feel like I'm still able to go out with the guys and talk Shocker sports, without battling the old hag about spending too much time at the sports bar!

          Cheers! ;-)

Because I love basketball. And even more than that I love Shocker basketball. I've grown up surrounded by KU fans who only want to talk about them. Because of that, I kept up with what was going on with KU basketball just so I could talk the sport. Luckily, I found someone on the JayhawkSlant that told me about the old Shocker EZ board. I've been hooked ever since. I loved following recruiting and that's pretty much where I started most of my posting back in the day. I also had a lot of free time. First, being a student and working part-time allowed for a lot of internet time. Than, working nights for the USPS freed up a lot of day light when all my friends were working or in school. Now, I have a job with a lot of downtime. I do have a few friends and family that will now talk WSU with me, but this place brings me so much more. Plus, a lot of news seems to break here so I can be ahead of others when they find out in the Eagle a day or two later :) Did I mention that I love basketball and especially Shocker basketball?

Came here a long time ago, never registered, only read. Decided to finally join the conversation. I enjoy reading the recruiting news that Trop most likely posts. I enjoy the back and forth on all the topics, but dislike the pessimistic trend of a few. I try and keep up on lots of shocker stuff on twitter, but also stop in here because occassionally if I missed it on twitter, I know someone has the scoop on here.

I am here doing my part to continue the trend of decrease in production at work due to on-line social networking, and in my case, sports fan sites.

As a WSU fan living outside of Wichita I felt isolated from my kind, surrounded by fans of other institutions. When I tried getting my Shocker fix online I could only find discussion sites for those other schools. So I made one. The people came. And now we have a Shocker community. I love community. I love the Shockers. So here I am. And here I'll stay.

Believe it or not – I visit this site for news about Shocker Basketball – I just don’t have much to say right now, in that respect (everyone else, in one way or another, says it for me). It, Shocker Basketball, doesn’t get a lot of play where I live. Which is fine – it should not. But due to this forum, strangely enough, I have met people, good people – that is a plus in my book.

While it is true I post most often, especially in the offseason, in the Politics Forum – I read everything else first. The Recruiting Forum is second to none (it has, in my judgment, no equal) thanks to a few posters – and thank you. But I’ll stick to what I know even when I dip my toe in waters I have been divorced with for more than a decade.

The bigger question is – "Why ask the question Doc?"

I simply bleed black and yellow basketball. I spend the vast majority of my time on the recruiting board because I am constantly eager to see what players across the nation we are in on. I do check the Men's Basketball board often too just to see if there is anything interesting going on there.

I've been a Shocker fan since the days of Lanny Van Eman, Ron Heller, Gene Wiley and the likes and have read the message board since I first discovered the previous board.

I tend to avoid the Men's Basketball board when the team is not playing up to the lofty expectations of the Board. I know how easy it is to lose all objectivity when it comes to judging the talent of the team we love and often we forget that other teams have good players too and that regardless how much talent you have, the team will still have bad games and bad stretches of games. I find that I get too angry when fans go off the deep end when the team loses or especially if they play badly for several consecutive games. During those times, I tend to skip by those posters who I know tend to ride the roller coaster of emotions from believing the team is the best in the country after a good game and a group of jerks with no talent, coaching, etc., after a loss. Or sometimes I'll just concentrate on the Recruiting board for a few weeks at a time.

Regardless, there are a few on the board who's posts I never want to miss. Especially those who truly care about the young men on the team regardless of their current success.

Started following Shocker basketball when I moved here in the late 60's when I was in HS. Listened to all the road games and those home games I didn't see in person. Also went to the Shocker home football games and later, my dad and I to Shocker baseball.

College basketball is my favorite sport followed closely by MLB / Shocker baseball (don't follow college baseball outside the Valley that close). I'm a WSU alum and love talking sports. Coached youth sports (baseball, basketball, soccer) and am the typical arm chair coach.

Image my surprise and joy when a friend of mine told me about a "WSU fan board". It's been hook, line, and sinker ever since. I relish reading and talking WSU sports with my fellow brethren. It's a very special outlet. I try to learn and widen my thinking from opinions that differ from mine, admittingly, even playing devil's advocate at times.

To me this is a band of brothers/sisters. The only thing that bothers me is when someone belittles or starts name calling his fellow Shocker fans.

I moved to the Springfield area in 2004. I had coached Banwart, Weber, and several others in that class at Westurban. I had no way to follow them and found Shockernet.

Thank You Royal. SN is my main connection to my favorite sports team. I've met a few posters in person and I've made a lot of friends who are Shocker junkies like me.

Why am I here ? It's like a de-hydrated man getting an IV everyday.
