As with many colleges an interesting history.
Catawba College opened in 1851 with a gift of 10 acres of land and a capital investment of $15,000. It was named for the Indian tribe which had already lent its name to the county and the river flowing nearby. The years that followed were filled with prosperity for the growing institution, reflecting the economic climate of the area. However, the Civil War brought drastic changes, reducing the availability of funds and students. During the war years, the College became an academy, operating as Catawba High School from 1865 to 1885. In the latter year, it resumed operations under its original charter and awarded its first college degrees in 1889.
In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution and its first woman graduate completed her studies in 1893. Even with the addition of women to the student body, the College struggled to overcome the ravages and depletion brought on by the war. Responding to the offer of a partially constructed dormitory-administration building and several acres of land in Salisbury, trustee, college, and church officials closed the campus in Newton in 1923 and re-opened in Salisbury in 1925.

Anybody know if this exhibition will be a sold-out packed house??? I know that's asking a lot for an exhibition game...but that would be cool for our newbies to experience that and get the nerves out before the season gets going for real.FINAL FOURS:

Eldridge goes with
Torres, 6'2", 189
Haynes-Jones, 6'0", 180
Dennis, 6'5", 208
McDuffie, 6'8", 218
Midtgaard, 7'0", 268
Also a lot of rundown on Catawba and some decent strengths/weaknesses of Catawba.
His evaluation predicts Shocker transition baskets and the Shox winning the rebound battle over a decent-rebounding Catawba team. Shox height will beat out Catawba's tenacity. Dennis will guard Catawba's top player, Jameel Taylor, a 6'4", 200 lb. head-down, drive to the basket guard.
My prediction:
Wheat - 78
Raisins - 52

We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.
