According to Eric Bossi, Word of Life in Wichita will probably have two D-1 prospects on their roster this year. Both are originally from South America. Anthony Perez Cortesia is 6-9 and he is a K-State lean if they want him. He went back to Venezuela for the summer instead of playing AAU, so there isn't much lately on his recruitment. The other is 6-4 Nehemias Morrillo who played last year at St. Benedict Prep of Newark. It appears he was one of their top three players. The other two were seniors and signed with North Carolina State and George Mason. I haven't seen recruiting info on him.

The real question is whether or not WOL's coach thinks WSU is good pickup?

Before people bite my head off I just joke with that comment. I understand these kids are not from around here and really have zero connection to WSU and are usually being recruited by other schools when they get here. Still makes me giggle though.

Was I the only one who missed the memo on why Wichita area Christian schools are suddenly a hotbed for international basketball talent?

No. But I like it. How cool would it be to have Word of Life and Sunrise have multiple D1 talents and go at it from time to time.

Guess it's time to find out if the Word of Life coach is a WSU fan :)

I heard on the radio the other day that he is the high school coach for Wichita Homeschool.

If they are not in the slight bit interested in WSU, who gives a 'F'. I'm tired of reading about local talent who do not want to play for WSU.

Well, at least 2 of the 4 players at Sunrise who have gone on to D-1 ball were more than slightly interested in being a Shocker. It's believed Raphael Akpejiori had the Shockers in his top two. There was definite mutual interest between WSU and Leon Cooper. However the Shockers didn't offer.

Smithson is indeed the new coach of the Wichita Defenders Homeschool team. Not sure who WOL's coach is, I know the last 2 years it was Hujing, but not sure if it is this year. I'd like to know how they get some of these players in Wichita. A lot of people say its illegal. Gotta admit it does seem fishy to me.

They're not KSHSAA schools so I don't think there's anything illegal with what they do. It's the same thing many of the prep schools in the country do. I assume by Hujing, you mean Ryan? Played at Remington, was a damn good official, and then got into coaching briefly at BCC when Smithson returned? If so, that team won't lack a knowledgable coach.

You got it. Ryan Hujing, never officiated with him, but I coached the JV for 1 season at WOL after Hujing took over. The year before, Hujing and I coached the JV while Shane Dreiling coached varsity. Both Hujing and Dreiling are great coaches, which explains why WOL is as good as they are every year.

I think WOL is a KSHSAA approved school. I don't have a problem with the whole recruiting, or whatever you want to call it. I mean hell, if Heights and Southeast can recruit, then why can't WOL and Sunrise? Thing is, they do it legally, while Heights and Southeast don't.

What league is WOL in? There are schools like Sunrise that KSHSAA approves for other schools to play, but aren't under the actual rules and regulations of KSHSAA.

Ryan is a great guy and knows his stuff.

I'm not sure, I think they are in some kind of christian league or something. I know that when i was there they were trying to get KSHSAA affiliated and get into a league.
