Eliminate The 3-Point Shot from College BB

OK, it’s that horrible time of the year when BB is still over 5 months away, so I’ll throw out a topic which hopefully will generate a little interest.

I don’t like the 3 Point Shot! To me it cheapens the game and puts way too much emphasis on one aspect of the game.

No other major sport gives extra credit for shooting or kicking a ball from a longer distance. So why should BB?

A home run in baseball over the short right field fence counts for only one run (not counting team mates on base), exactly the same as one over the further left field, and center field fences. And in the very rare occasions when someone has nailed one completely out of the park, it still counts for only one run.

A field goal in Football, no matter how far it is kicked, counts exactly the same from any distance, as well as any pass, including the Hail Mary.

The same is true in Soccer, Hockey, and Volley Ball.

The only sport I can think of where distance matters is Track and Field, but these are mostly individual events and not really team sports (except for the overall standings) and rarely is a ball involved, except if one considers the shot putt a ball. Never try to bounce one.

I love me some 3 point shots. The three point shot is the equalizer. Allows the little guys to compete. A 6’0 footer who can shoot the3 can be just as valuable as a post-up 7’0 footer. And a 7’0 footer who can post-up and shoot the 3 is the equivalent of a 3-down back in football. Every team wants one of those guys.

Eliminate the 3 and all a defense has to do is clog up the lane.

The baseball analogy doesn't hold. A 300' fly ball, not only counts for no points, it actually works against you. A 400' fly ball counts for at least 1 point (depending on the distance to the fence).

Some pretty good coaching and planning is in play when a defense has to guard both corners of the court. The drive and dish game with 4 out and 1 in is pretty entertaining. It's painful when your team can't execute or defend it.

The game has changed. Three point shooting is really a focus in all levels of basketball, particularly in the NBA and college. We need to keep the three point shot, but move back to the International/European Line.

As often said, the 3pt shot is the great equalizer. I believe it adds greatly to the game. Seems like only 8-10 years ago media and fans were consistently complaining about the lack of skill & fundamentals in the NCAA/NBA. The new focus on the 3pt shot has resulted in more skilled players, and a more eye pleasing style of play. It's also changed the schematics of offense and defense. If you don't enjoy and appreciate watching teams like Villanova & Golden State you're missing out. I can't imagine anyone preferring a style of say West Virginia over Villanova.

Here's why we should/will always have a 3pt line in the NCAA

#1 - With a 3pt line the skill level at the four position has improved tremendously. Removing the 3pt shot would bring back the double post, aka linemen in the mud offense. Resulting in an increase of minutes for bigger, slower, and less killed players and decreasing minutes for the more fluid and skilled, but often smaller players.

#2 Removing the 3pt line would favor the "power schools", as they generally have the bigger, stronger, faster athletes. Mid major teams that have experience combined with skilled passers and shooters make March the best time of the year.

#3 The NBA game has evolved into a league of passing and shooting. 3 & D guys are hot commodities, and without an NCAA 3pt line evaluations would be limited. The likely result would be a major marketing push of the G league, which no NCAA basketball fan should want.

Off topic, but the NCAA has to accomodate the NBA powers that be. Should they decide to, the NBA could literally make the highest level of college basketball equivalent to MAC teams.

End of game is far worse. The last two minutes of the E8 OSU game took like 40 minutes. Looking forward to the Elam Ending getting a bigger stage to try to fix it.

But those two things are not worth the same amount of points. A touchdown is harder so it's worth more than a field goal. Three-pointers are more difficult shots.

If three-pointers were disproportionately easy shots for the number of points they're worth, you'd expect to see three-point specialists dominate the true shooting percentage charts. Just look at the rankings of the best true-shooting percentage seasons: https://www.basketball-reference.com...ct_season.html. It's definitely not totally dominated by three point specialists. If anything, it has a lot more big guys who dominate down low.

I love the 3. Pick and pop, and dribble drive kick outs make for pretty basketball.

Clears out the lane too for post players with moves.

Keep the 3 point shot, but install whack-a-mole pop-ups all over the court and randomly energize them throughout the game. Interestingly, this probably wouldn't affect UNI's game much.

I say we also allow a player to get "on fire" once he's made three shots in a row, a la NBA Jam. Would really add to the excitement of the college game.

The problem with this idea is that it would also mean that no team could ever get ahead by more than 7 points. In case you doubt my point, the next time you play NBA Jam and get down by 7+ points, just start chucking from half court and see what happens.
