The Bottom 6 RPI teams in the AAC had 15 non-con games against RPI 200-249 + 12 games against RPI 250-299 + 18 games agaisnt RPI 300+ (total of 45 Tier 4 non-con games)

BTW, 6 of these 70 games were against 5 Sun Belt teams.

Seems like there is ample ballast that could be replaced with a little lighter load even with the right Sun Belt teams.
You forgot one huge additional consideration: the simple optics of such a relationship.

If (some portion of) the AAC big dogs were irked at WSU joining the AAC, I wouldn’t want to be the one to tell them that they were compelled to a H-H with Arkansas freaking State.

"Providence Basketball: Breaking down the Friars’ 2018-19 non-conference slate" - FanSided Sports

      by Lukas Harkins
      Posted: 06/13/14, 11:15am cst

"Providence basketball looks poised for a solid campaign in 2018-19 and their non-conference schedule will play a role in their NCAA Tournament chances.

Providence basketball has been extremely consistent under head coach Ed Cooley. The program has reached the Big Dance in the last five years of his leadership with seeds ranging from a No. 6 (2014-15) to a No. 11 (2016-17, 2013-14). However, despite the regular season success that Cooley has experienced, he is yet to reach the second weekend of the Big Dance. Given the seeds of his teams, PC has never been a “favorite” to reach the Sweet 16 but there are No. 6-11 seeds who go that far every single year. Could 2018-19 be the year that the Friars finally reach the elusive Sweet 16? As of now, Providence has not reached the second weekend since 1996-97.

Obviously, the play on the court is what determines how successful a team is most but scheduling also plays a valuable role. The NCAA Tournament is all about matchups and teams can ensure quality ones with regular seasons that result in great seeds. Considering Providence plays in the Big East, one-half of the schedule is already above-average in the nation. In order to build a quality non-conference schedule, though, a program needs to be willing to negotiate with other teams to find time to play, locations, etc....

Without further ado, Providence basketball released its 2018-19 non-conference schedule on June 12, so let’s dive in. Complete non-conference schedule

Nov. 6 – vs. Siena: Out of the MAAC, Siena had a rough go of things in 2017-18. The Saints finished the year at just 8-24 (4-14) and not a single player averaged scoring in double-figures per game. The leading scorer from last year also elected to transfer this offseason.

Nov. 9 – vs. Wichita State (neutral site): Unlike prior years, 2017-18 is expected to be a down season for Wichita State. While it is never smart to count out WSU, they lost a ton this offseason, including Landry Shamet. The neutral site for this non-conference matchup will be the Naval Academy...."

How did the MVC miss out on this Alliance of 5 thing? It seems they'd be a better fit than the AAC.

That’s assuming that the Valley would be forward-thinking for such a thing.

I'm thinking at this point is that some reporter just threw out the Group of 5 Conferences which is really an FBS Football term just as an example of what schools MIGHT be in a men's basketball scheduling alliance with Sun Belt schools.

Realistically what are the chances the AAC would have any interest is such a thing especially in light of their efforts to promote the AAC as a Power 6 conference and to separate itself from these other conferences? That would seem to be counter to the branding they are trying hard to promote.

Maybe the AAC will allow it's members to participate if they want to but not participate as a Conference while discourage participation if it works at croos purposes to the Power6 branding.

If some AAC schools can jettison some SWAC and MEAC opponents and maybe a few other bottom feeders and repalce them with better oppoinents so be it.

Unlikely that the AAC will participate as a conference.

Obviously the Sun Belt would like to promote this since the are the worst basketball conference of the "Group of 5" FBS conferences bu quiote a bit. In men's basketball the only peer conference the Sun Belt has among this group might be C-USA. Maybe. There are about 5 oher conferences between C-USA and the Sun Belt in men's basketball.

You're exactly right in saying that "Group of 5" is a football term; that's how the term came into being, and it has a specific purpose in connection with the bowl game selections and lineup,

But lots of media and sporting types tend to apply college sports terminology pretty loosely -- and really, to be fair, so do lots of posters: how many times have we read something on here about "Power 5" in a basketball context, even though its true meaning relates, once again, specifically to the big football bowl game$? And it actually can lead to useful ways of thinking about conferences, although it's clear that the demarcation between the five big boys vs. the others in football is much sharper than a similar demarcation would be in basketball, or even more so in baseball; and the conferences (and number of them) on the right side of the tracks also vary in each of the sports.

Pairings are out. WSU only has 1 game vs UCF and 1 vs Houston. So they don't appear to think WSU will be top tier this time.

Looks like the same bottom 3 - ECU, Tulane, and USF.

Top 2 look like Cincinnati and UCF.

The other 7 are pretty mixed up.

Almost all of these games should be buy or 2 for 1 games. Buffalo had a good RPI last season doesn’t mean they will consistently be a Top 75 or even Too 100. What is their RPI the past 5-10 seasons?

It's interesting that WSU won't be playing 2 or the upper level teams twice.

I could make a case for Tulane bring much better this year. They looked reasonably impressive last year with a couple of studs.

The Shockers beat them bad in the first half....not in the 2nd. The guys let their foot off the gas and looked bad in the last 20 minutes. Coach was not pleased. Houston outplayed the Shocks in the last 20.

Take Houston out and sub in a reusable blank space, and this comment works perfectly for at least half of the game slate last year.
