An ESPN "Insiders" Report by Doug Gottlieb

COACHING RUMORS, TANTALIZING TRANSFERS AND MORE

    ...

Why did Gregg Marshall not leave Wichita State?

Two reasons: For one, WSU is considered, along with Creighton, to be the best job in the Missouri Valley. Wichita pays $1 million per year, they sell out nearly every game and with former coach Mark Turgeon only getting them to one NCAA tournament in seven years, there is pressure, but not unrealistic pressure to win big there.

Secondly, Marshall, per several sources, is waiting on the South Carolina Gamecocks job to come open. Marshall, who is from South Carolina and took Winthrop (in South Carolina) to seven NCAA tournaments, and once took the College of Charleston job only to change his mind, believes that USC is his destination job and Darren Horn needs to win ASAP. That is why Marshall reportedly turned down NC State and the chance to even talk to Texas A&M. It is also why he re-upped with WSU.

Nothing that we have not already surmised, but it is a bit more startling when seen in print by ESPN.

So what are the prospects for South Carolina in the next couple of years? They didn't have a great year this last year, but according to the Scout recruiting site, at least, it seems that they have recently begun to snag a number of fairly prominent recruits. I don't know South Carolina basketball well enough to speculate on how it will play out. It appears that they were a really young team this last year (only 3 upperclassmen).

I don't think South Carolina is his destination job any longer.

I think he's already at his destination job.

After a really good first year, he has had two straight disappointing years.

He is on the "Hot Seat" this coming year. If they don't turn it around, he could be gone.

I know that isn't what you want to here from a WSU standpoint, but that is reality.

That's exactly the way I see it, as well.

I really hope we can add ADES to the list of those who see it that way.

If it happens there is nothing ADES can do to stop it. He needs a really really good plan B.....and of course I hope he doesn't have to use it.

Pretty sure there are very good plan Bs if needed.

Thoughts about Jans being a viable replacement?

If at some juncture 3G ends up with the SC job straight from WSU then I have to give him big props. Depending on who tells it, he's been offered a few BCS jobs but not taken them. It would say something to us all about making your own luck through a) making a plan and b) working the plan. If this job comes open I think our only speculation is who's the new coach at WSU. If Horn turns it around then I think both sides better prepare for Plan B.

In the event of an opening down the road, I do think that Jans should be given a chance to interview for the job. I would be comfortable with him taking over the program if that happens. I'm confident that there will be other qualified individuals interested in it as well.
