Jay Bilas's Most Underappreciated Coaches

Not having read the article, I'll still make a couple of comments. HCGM is definitely not underappreciated by WSU or its fans; most everytime a Big 6 job comes up, the media and the fans of the school involved, bring up his name (or he pulls his name or turns down an offer); and in the recent, unscientific poll, he was the 2nd favored MVC coach by MVC fans to run their team if they didn't have their current coach.
Therefore, the only thing I can think of that Bilas could have been referring to was HCGM being underappreciated by...... Matilda. Perhaps these two media giants (well, one maybe) should discuss their difference of opinions.

They don't get the publicity they deserve, but they can teach and coach the game. And oftentimes, these guys are just one March run away from making their mark.
Mark Turgeon, Maryland: Turgeon has won at Wichita State and Texas A&M and will win at Maryland. He can X and O with anyone, but his greatest strength is his toughness and his will. Turgeon has many of the best attributes of Calhoun. Turgeon has the goods to be one of the best coaches in the game.
Gregg Marshall, Wichita State: A former assistant to John Kresse at College of Charleston, Marshall did a great job at Winthrop before taking over for Turgeon at Wichita State. His Shockers team was very good in 2010-11 and played its best at the end of the season in winning the NIT. Wichita State should expect its phone to ring every April, because Marshall is going to continue to garner interest from other schools.
Pretty boring stuff.

I also appreciate that he was here for as long as he was. Nevertheless, he "got out" while the getting was still good. Had he had another full year of what he went through the last 2/3s of his last last season at WSU, he might of been sequestered to "that level" for some time.
And X and O with anyone? Well, I haven't paid that close attention since he went to aTm, so maybe things have changed. However, I seemed to remember here that he was always having to adjust to what the opponent's coach was doing and not dictating the game himself. Being able to get your team to adjust is better than not, but its also is not X and O ing with the best.
As far as the Marshall comments, I guess I wouldn't want it any other way.

I was never impressed with Turgeon's Xs and Os, of course, no one has EVER asked me to coach, so...what do I know. There were so many times I felt like we had the advantage inside and/or we could have gone to a zone, but MT refused. Either way, yeah, I don't see it.Livin the dream

Eventually Gregg Marshall is going to leave; I hope this is not for 5+ years and multiple national titles (led by Perry Ellis.) :D
WSU needs two things.- Position itself (salary, reputation, etc.) to be a highly desirable destination.
- Have the judgement to select a new coach who can recruit like Gregg Marshall and has a tactical (Xs & Os) coaching ability at least as great as that of Altman (who outcoached MT on a regular basis.)
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

I did notice on aTm's board that they blamed their loss in the NCAA's on not enough big guys.
Ironically, Bowles may turn out to be the best big Turgeon has recruited at this point in time, nd he transferred because he couldn't get any PT at aTm.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Aargh...The bigs were the strength of the A&M team last year. They were short on guard play. As for Bowles being the best big recruited...I think David Loubeau, Kourtney Roberson, Ray Turner, Keith Davis and Tobi Oyedeji (RIP) had something to do with Bowles not staying at A&M and all were recruited by Mark and staff and are the primary reason he saw no court time and realized it would be the same in the future.
As for Paul...So we are giving Paul's recruitiment to Stephenson? Miller quit trying to play for him less than a year after landing on campus. To be honest Oklahoma and Texas Tech not going all in on Paul and wanting him to wait on his commitment probably had more to do with it. At least that's what I was led to believe.

Stephenson has pretty much always been credited with getting Miller here. At least on this site. Nothing new there.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

I wondered, when TurFin would show up for the Coach Turgeon bashing party.
He has done so with great restraint, me thinks. He speaks with facts.
