  • 2011 Puerto Rico Tip Off - Wichita State Connections

8 schools and you have to tie them all, somehow with current personnel, to WSU.

Some will be easy, others may take a little digging. I am taking this walk with you....I don't know there is an answer, I just think there is. I'll start us off.....

    And away we go!

Wichita State - Head Coach Gregg Marshall enters his 5th season as the man in charge at 21st and Hillside.

    1 down, 7 to go.

Purdue Head Coach, Matt Painter, coached at SIU '98 - '04. Is that a tie to WSU?

Picked up on this as well

Alabama - a good team we just humiliated in last years NIT
Colorado - former head coach in waiting Tad Boyle helms the Buffs
Maryland - Larry Brown disciple Mark Turgeon brings his brand of stingy defense and judicious offense to the nation's capital.
Ions - also has a mascot that no one from outside the school understands.
Wichita State, home of the All-Americans.

These two are a little bit of a stretch ...

Temple lost to San Diego State (WSU foe in '10-11) in 2011 NCAA 2nd round.
WMU lost to Buffalo (WSU's foe in '09 CBA) in the 2011 CIT.

Is this like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?

I really like our chances in this tournament. We won't get seeded #1 or anything (if they do that at this tourney) but we would have to be in the discussion for 2nd or 3rd. Beating Maryland would be fantastic. Beating Alabama again would be tough--their coach is good and won't make the same mistakes again guaranteed.

          It should be fun!

Since I started the discussion, I get to say what counts.

I would also try to include a particular moment or incident, at CKA if possible, to further cement the bond.

In Coach Painter's case, January 28, 2004. He brings his #23 ranked Salukis into the Chuck to take on WSU. Down something like 34-9, former coach Mark Turgeon calls his 3rd timeout of the first half and begins to implore his team to fight. The packed house begins to respond to Mark's tirade, and fueled by that embarrassment, the team goes on a run and closes to within 13 by halftime. Matt Clark's 3 right before half sends the crowd into a frenzy, and the noise level hit new highs for the arena.

The comeback continued into the first 9 minutes of the 2nd half, when the Shocks erased the entire 25+ point deficit and actually held a brief 4 point lead if memory serves me right, but alas ran out of gas and ended up losing 84-79. Still, one of the best games ever played in the Chuck, and one of my fondest memories of guts and effort in the face of a SUPER SIU team, led by one of, if not the best young coach in the country, Matt Painter.

              This is fun ...

              How about ...

Iona dropped football in 2008. Wichita State dropped football in 1987.

Not sure of the year. But WSU beat a ranked Alabama team at Henry Levitt arena and after the game their coach swore he would quit coaching if his team ever played that bad again. :D
Marge: The plant called and said that if you don't come in tomorrow, don't bother coming in Monday.
                Homer: WOOHOO! Four day weekend.

Mike Cohen was our Coach at that time. The Alabama Coach called the Locker Room show thereafter which was totally strange. At least he said it was him. Yikes!!!

Right about that same time, we also beat Oklahoma State. In that game, Robert George put on a show versus their tough guards that I will never forget. That same Season, it seems like we also beat Notre Dame. Cooper was undercut and broke his leg that Season. Guff made more 2 point shots with his tiptoes on the 3 point line than anybody in Shocker history. My only other beef with Guff was he did NOT shoot the rock enough.

Just think if Mark Hutton would have passed his entrance test(I think he missed it by 1 point) and if Skip Nickerson would have stayed, who knows. What if, I say!!!!!!! Nickerson and Robert George in the same backcourt would have been a sight to behold. Oh well, that was many, many moons ago and next Season will be fun--very verry fun and exciting.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

ESPN has to be drooling. Go kick his ass, Gregg!

                      Cooper was not just undercut.
The Tennessee player came down with his foot directly on the side of Coopers leg. Kind of like a Joe Theisman scene as I recall. It was downhill from there that season plus a lot more seasons.
