  • 3 Point Shooting

3-point shooting stats are a little surprising. Of the players who have attempted at least 10 3's, here's how they stack up.

    1 - Darral Willis .500 (8/16)
    2 - Landry Shamet .490 (24/49)
    3 - Rauno Nurger .429 (6/14)
    4 - Austin Reaves .400 (12/30)
    5 - Shaq Morris .389 (7/18)
    6 - Conner Frankamp.367 (22/60)
    7 - Samajae Haynes-Jones .333 (5/15)
    8 - Zach Brown .250 (6/24)

    Edit: Corrected SHJ's makes.

3 post players in the top 5. 2 backcourt players and a wing in the bottom 3. That's just wrong.

The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Samajae is actually 5/15. But on that topic .. he was 4-6 vs Savannah State, so he's 1/9 for the rest of the year ...

Still a very small sampling. We all know who we want taking threes. Now to improve the offense, not
the defense, we need a three point threat on BOTH wings. Having threats on both wings will make
LS look even better. First, teams can't cheat off of one wing and lean his way to help. Second, it
spreads the defense more for LS to penetrate and that opens up everything else. Would like to see
more AR at the small forward spot until MM returns. Two wings that can shoot will make Jones a
better offensive PG, as well, and allow more one on one post up match ups.

Even the ones we want shooting 3's haven't help in our 2 loses. In those games, our guards (Shamet, Frankamp, Reaves, and Haynes-Jones were a combined 6-30 (20%) in 3-pt shooting. If you only include Shamet and Frankamp, it's a combined 4-22 (18%).

Our shooters are not getting the best of looks because of an unbalanced floor. When one wing is weak
the defenders cheat and make it harder on CF/LS to get open shots. Having a threat on both wings
balances the court and opens up everything, threes included, offensively. Can't have one defender
cheating off his man and helping every where else. Opponents can't/won't cheat with AR or MM
playing small forward and that makes everyone else, especially LS, more dangerous

Got used to seeing that scenario when Jamar Howard was here.. He was not a three point threat so it was like five on four with his guy cheating off him outside of the three point line.

Something needs to be done about Zach Brown. He’s not going to shoot himself out of whatever “it” is. He has the confidence of a 0% 3 pt shooter and is taking shots a 45% sharpshooter would take.

Yep. The red light needs to be shined brightly here.

While true ... then that means he is completely useless (relatively) on the offensive end. That's not good.

He's not in there for offense. Ever. He's a bad shooter. He has bad handles. He has a craving for Butterfingers.

He's in there for defense and rebounding. Primarily, defense. And even there, he's losing a bit of his edge. That's why I expect his minutes to be reduced when MM comes back.

SHJs numbers went way up after last night and Landry is now shooting a cool 50% from 3.

As as a team the Shockers are shooting over 39%. The odd ranking order of our shooters isn’t because our guards are bad, it’s because the posts are shooting it so well.
