  • Reflecting on the NIT tourney

Thinking back on the NIT tourney ...

Other than the close AWAY game -- there wasn't really a struggle the entire tourney. We were on a completely different level than the rest of the field, it seems.

Is there a record for total margin of victory? If you add up all the "points for" and deduct all the "points against", it has to be right up there with some of the best showings, doesn't it? The one away game may have dampened it quite a bit, but still. I realize it won't be the top, but it has to be up there.

The field was expanded in 1980, so I'm guessing the Total Margin of Victory Record comes somewhere since then. I can't find a "record", but I have a list of champions and their winning scores. I'm not going to go through and manually add them all up, but at first glance it looks like Villanova in 1994 is one of the top ones, with 79. Wichita State was 77.

Wow, if we were really only one bucket away from that record, what a big deal.

Did 'Nova have to play an away game in 1994?

        Yep, one at Duquesne.

        103-79 Canisius
        82-66 @ Duquesne
        98-74 Clemson
        66-58 Siena (MSG)
        80-73 Vanderbilt (MSG)

Like I said, there might be a bigger total than 'Nova's, but they're the one that stands out the most.

When Bradley won it in 1982, I think they had a bunch of blowouts. I'll see if I can find those scores.

Edit: Bradley won their 5 games by a total of 66 points.

Interesting. Man I wish we would have caught fire just one game earlier.

I thought the team did a good job throughout the NIT run. We played solid, and didn't really have a letdown game. The VT game was exciting.
