  • Another thing: why is Gregg so reluctant to switch screens against teams that run a lot of drag screens, pin downs, and double screens?

Who ran that kind of offense a lot in the MVC? Evansville. It's junk offense, but Marshall teams have struggled mightily to defend it in years past because he RARELY allows switches. Baylor got tons of open shots running double screens against WSU in the first half on Saturday.

I get not wanting to get into mismatches - which could lead to both big men or little guys to get into foul trouble - but sometimes you need to show that look.

I will say thought, that WSU hassome of the BEST ball screen defense in the country
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Maybe because they still win these games. When you're elite at what you do, sometimes it's best to just keep doing what you're elite at, rather than try to change every other game. The overall results have been pretty incredible.

Didn't even watch the game, the box score shows all I need to know. The team is allowing well over 40% of their opponents shots to be taken from three. That's not great, especially in a one loss tournament where teams can get hot. (yes I know about the SSU game).

Ranked #55 in total 3pt defense but have to imagine that is going to skyrocket after tonight.

Trae Young could drop 50 in the first half on WSU.
The 3 point defense wasn't great. The screen switching was awful. But SDSU can simply shoot it. They were burying 25-footers out there, a few with hands in the face.

Sometimes teams just shoot the **** out of the ball and you simply can't defend it. Sometimes teams get up even more so when playing top tier teams. We should be lucky that happened to us and still won by double-digits.

    • I went to the game with my uncle and I knew there would be a let down between the Baylor win and the next game... I just didn't think it would be as bad as the the first half and spurts of the 2nd half.

SDSU had a few really good shooters and they ran what looked like the same play multiple times. Guard drives, 2 defenders go after him leaving open #23, 24, and 45 on SDSU. It looked like groundhog day as they repeated this and made 3 pointer after 3 pointer.

Positives: Shaq 2nd half, Frankamp, Shamat.

neutral - brown, kelly, nurger, Austin, Willis.

      appeared bad - CJ.

It appeared everytime Shaq, Frankamp, Shamat were in and someone other than Brown or Kelly in the first half that the team played well.
When Conner was subbed out for CJ or Austin the offense ran into issues.

Overall glad they won and the depth showed in the 2nd half.

Any ideas why Samajae didn't see a single second of action?

      • I'm not sure what happened to the majority of my post, but there are tons of positives from this game.

        We didn't quit
We overcome some insane shooting by SDSU

I'd like to get into a press situation much sooner. SDSU tired legs must've let to rushed shots, falling short, etc.

I wonder that type of energy expenditure occurs when the body is operating at 98-100%? Like say if you can operate at 50% for an 20 minutes, but 98% for 2 minutes. I'm just curious how quickly the body fatigues at extremely high levels of effort.

Anyway, like I was saying, I'd like to see going into a press type situation a bit earlier I'm the second half. I can't remember when we started it, but it seems by minute 16 we could slap it on to wear teams out earlier with our depth.

I think the philosophy behind the press isn't to wear the other team down, but to capitalize when they are worn down. It could be a double-edged slapping it on earlier in the game if they broke it and got easy buckets, but it is much harder to that when they are tired. I seem to recall this time we waiting till after the momentum changed with the Shaq 3 to really put it too them, and I think that was probably about the right time.

We could have used him, especially slowing down their quick guard. Now I am fearless, but these jackrabbits did hop on my last nerve tonight and had an epic performance. The Shocks took their best shot, which was a good haymaker, and still were resilient finally. They had solid shooters and a future NBA potential and gave us a scare. It goes down as a win but it shows we still have plenty of unfinished buswax to take care of as we watched 3G storm between two Shocks to race to the locker room to spread peace and prosperity. Muhahaaha. That even made my knees knock watching that from afar!!! Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

But Ball State lost big to Oklahoma, and Oklahoma lost to Arkansas. Arkansas lost big to Houston, and Houston lost to Drexel. Now, here's where it gets interesting: Drexel lost to Drake.

So we're worse than Drake now. And your mother is still a whore.

            • Felt like we were playing UNI West there, less the Panthers’ b movie-level flop show.

If SDSU wins their conference tournament there’s going to be some sheetty mid-pack P5 team that’s going to have a very bad March Madness experience.

So, there is some hope for ECU. Just wait a year after your coach quits in November.

It's just stunning how long leashes are given here. It's like getting hit in the head with a brick over and over again. Does moderation not feel the brick?

                • Game of two half’s, defending the 3 needs to get better, we started switching on the screen 2nd half and did a better job. The press wore them down and Shaq and Shamet took over the last 12 minutes. Conner is starting to get in a grove shooting the 3 and he is starting to take it to the basket alittle more over the last few games. This was a trap game after the big win at Baylor. We fought through a bad defensive first half but you have to give credit to South Dakota, they were hot for the first 25 minutes, there a dangerous team who have some good wins. Good comeback, this team never gives up, never. That’s what I love about these guys. Now let’s get the Cowboys

                  • On the radio broadcast tonight Mike and Bob mentioned Daum being a redshirt junior who has a pretty good shot going to the NBA or even becoming a graduate transfer. I wonder if he'd consider transferring here. With a bunch of new blood coming in, it'd be nice to have another highly skilled veteran, but could his play fall in line with the play angry ethos when it came defense and rebounding? As SHOCKvalue so perfectly described them as UNI West, he seems like the type of player that'd be a Ben Jacobson wet dream and probably many others.
