I was going to mention that, since I was one of the ones that stated the schedule is done.

This would seem to suggest that my information is sorely lacking.

I know it won't happen, but nothing would make me happier than to see us eat one of those powder puff home games and take New Mexico, St. Mary's, etc. up on their offer for a home-and-home. Start here, start there...who cares- just get it done.

If we absolutely MUST have those home games for revenue purposes (I've never completely bought this argument), then throw in Pitt St or Emporia State so that it doesn't go all nuclear reactor on our RPI. It just takes one 300+ RPI team to effectively cancel out a game against a top 25 RPI team.

There is no reason why this needs to be a pipe dream.

Didn't get all that far through, but New Mexico St, ODU, George Mason, and Dayton would be possibilities for H/H. I believe NM St would start on the road on the 21st. Dayton and ODU were looking for BCS teams for H/H, but I would think a quality non-Big 6 team would fit the bill.

It's really very aggravating that we are not looking for something like that.

Well said, Go. I've often said that I trust the coaching staff to get this right, in part because it's in their financial interest to do so -- the better WSU performs, and the more NCAA appearances that result, the more money the program generates (and the better salaries the staff can command).

In theory, you do a guarantee game because you don't want to give up a home game every other year -- the cost of two guarantees is supposed to be less than the loss of the alternate year home gate. But those aren't the only dollars and cents involved. Putting your program in position to collect NCAA money (not to mention national recognition) has value, too, and it's clear the Shocks aren't yet doing enough in the skewed world of the NCAA tournament to be a more or less automatic regular participant.

Obviously one way to get in is to win the conference tournament, and Marshall knows that as well as anyone based on his Winthrop years. Another is to perform so well doing the season you command an at-large spot no matter what. But in real life, especially real life in a league with a number of teams who have no national profile but can nevertheless sneak up and bite you if you have the inevitable off night once in a while (e.g., SIU last year, Evansville the year before), it's nice to have a backup plan.

Unfortunately, it looks at this point as though WSU's backup plan still needs some work. And it sure seems like a home-and-home with, say, George Mason instead of another SWAC guarantee game would be a step in the right direction.

I think it's more important to WIN in the situations we are presented with. Our schedule last year wasn't that bad, but we failed on at least 2 major occasions to win games that would've created our 'signature win' and propelled us into the big dance.

This year's schedule is going to present similar opportunities, and we fully utilize them or we'll be right back where we were this year.

Only at least 2 major occasions.

UConn, San Diego State, VCU, MSU at home, @MSU.

One or two of those loses changed to wins could have put us in as an at large.

As a fan cupcakes are boring.

But from a coaching perspective being able to:

1) try different line-ups,

2) reinforce specific pieces of your system before conference play, and

3) to test your players with new concepts in game situations

in low risk games that also help give some breathing room for your "win count" seems like a useful strategy for getting your butt into the NCAA.

Yes, you could play higher ranked teams trying to develop your system or grow your freshmen/sophomores into it, but the risk increases substantially. So I guess it's all about risk tolerance.
