  • Hutch News columnist thinks it's time . . .

. . . for KU and KSU to play WSU.

Hutch News now has a paywall, but it may still be readable.

For the record, this isn't a big issue for me as I've stopped caring much about KU or KSU in any form. Just thought I'd share.

Good, sound, straight forward opinion with little to no fluff and plenty of substance and common sense.

More of guys like that, and less of everyone else.

OK, I don't blame you for not caring about KU or KSU. But I bet you care about strengthening WSU's schedule. We are in the best position ever to add good BCS schools to it by getting fair contracts with KU and KSU. People on both sides are calling for it. I encourage everybody to be vocal and make this happen.

Yes, trop, I do care about that. I'm just not one of those who holds some degree of animosity toward them for not playing us.

That's even better Royal. People pay more attention when they are approach by a person with a level head instead of hostility.

Hostility draws plenty of attention. Though it tends to culminate in the presence of a badge. Not good. ;)

I find it ironic that we can schedule Texas Tech and Oklahoma State but not either of these two teams within our own state. Too bad. I know KU thinks they have nothing to gain, but that is just a BCS attitude...unfortunately one that WSU has to contend with on a constant basis. Ohhh, the arrogance.

Can someone please inform me what KU would have to gain by playing WSU?... and no, getting a bunch of angry WSU's fans off KU's back doesn't count. KU not caring about what WSU fans think is all it takes to get rid of that one.

I'm not saying I don't think there are a few small things KU would gain. I just don't understand the quick jump into talks of arrogance as if KU has lots of good reasons but simply chooses to make a decision against their own best interests.

Jamar, I love your insight and I appreciate your viewpoint, but I am SICK AND TIRED of hearing what KU has or doesn't have to gain by playing WSU.

Using that thought process, what does KU have to gain by playing ANY OOC teams? They'll be favored to win them all, so why play any?

That attitude also lends itself to the thinking that WSU has NO chance to be competitive with, or heaven help all of us, actually beat KU. You know what? Maybe you haven't been paying attention lately, but our program is pretty darned solid, and last time I checked, they don't count McDonald's All Americans when they keep score.

But since you asked, here's what they have to gain. A more prepared team for the post season. Experience in a game where there is big time pressure to win and they are favored. Increased revenue in a variety of forms, and don't give me the "they sell out every game already" crap. The games could be played in other arenas, generating revenue from a variety of sources, in addition to just being a sold out (with paying customers buying things in attendance, which doesn't always happen when they play Longwood etc). They also just might gain a few new fans in the process.

And, damn it, they just might get a little better from playing a really good team, just like they might get better playing a really good USC team...if USC were to ever be really good.

And it's not like we are an RPI killer if KU loses. At least lately.

Oh, and as long as both programs get ONE SINGLE RED CENT of the taxpayer's money in the form of cash, subsidies or tax breaks, then the PEOPLE have a vested interest in keeping the money here in Kansas.

It's just EXACTLY that kind of arrogance that breeds the contempt between the 2 programs, and it doesn't have to be like that. It can be different. There can be a constructive dialogue that builds a useful competition and honest respect for the state D1 programs. But someone is going to have to sit the children down.

Wow, I knew that I would hit a sore spot with that post, but...

I actually think WSU would have a very good shot to beat KU the last couple years. I have no question about WSU's ability to compete with KU.

WuDrWu, you ask what KU has to gain by playing ANY OOC teams? Obviously, you were being sarcastic. KU makes money with every game they play, so obviously they want to play as many as they can.

Would playing WSU really better prepare KU for the post season? Given the quality of teams that KU usually plays in the non-conf, KU would likely be trading an equal opponent for WSU on the schedule.

I am not opposed to legislation forcing this game. I'm simply asking what the reasons are for KU to choose to play it.

I really am interested to hear more on the following:
                            - Increased revenue (how does playing WSU increase the revenue that KU brings in compared to any other quality opponent?)
                            - Replacing Longwood with WSU (Couldn't KU replace Longwood with anyone decent and get the same effect? Why is WSU any better of a replacement than any other quality team?)

One other thing KU has to gain is playing a team with a balanced combination of talent, athleticism and experience.

They seem to falter against such teams when it counts.
