  • Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook (2017-18)

I purchased the Blue Ribbon Yearbook since based on the pre-season expectations that this is Top 10 team in the country and just wanted to enjoy the ride fully. Hear are some general observations from it.

Sullentrop is one of the writers for AAC - so WSU info is detailed and accurate.

    All-American Team
    4th Team

    Gary Clark (Cincy)
    Landry Shamet (WSU)

    Preseason Ranking
    7. WSU
    13. Cincinnati

WSU has almost 3 pages on it.

    Key Marshall Comments

Darral Willis - He's got to evolve as a defender -- that was all new to him last year, but says he got all the tools and expects improvement in his 2nd year.
Nurger - He has gotten a lot stronger this summer.
Reaves - did not shoot at the end of the season much because should would pop out.
Jones - can score rim, pull-up or hit 3's.
Keyser - He's got the ability, right now he does not have the mindset [talking about being a Cotton type player]
Midtgaard - We''ll have to make a really good decision on how much he will be able to play and whether we will burn a year of eligibility

    Backcourt: B+
    Frontcourt A
    Bench/Depth: B+
    Intangibles A

    AAC Rankings
    1. WSU
    2. Cincy
    3. SMU
    4. Houston
    5. UCONN
    6. Temple

Top Backcourt: 1. WSU, 2. SMU 3. UCONN
Top Frontcourt: 1. Cincy 2. WSU 3. Houston

Not that I think we should have had an A across the board, but I'd take our second 5 against most anyone else's in the country and definitely our 9-13.

Our backcourt, if healthy, will be very good this year. It's very "UCONN."

I'm torn about Midtgaard. On one hand, I'd hate to see him burn a redshirt season when we have so many talented bigs this year and his playing time might be limited. On the other, if he can contribute meaningful minutes, especially during conference play (he may be a real asset against Tacko and UCF).

Of course, Marshall has found ways to neutralize big centers in the past without a 7 footer, so there's that as well.

With MM's status questionable for who knows how long DW will most likely share the four spot with
RK. I think AM will be needed for some minutes in quite a few games. I think he adds value to the
team THIS season. I'd like to see an experiment early on with him at center and RN at PF playing
in a 3-2 zone defensively. I think it would make a nice change up defensively for a few minutes at a
              time.
