    How so?
Although I enjoy slamming Creighton as much as the next Shocker fan, I've got to say that Double Jay is correct here. Nothing new in hiring a successful coach in order to seal the deal with a perspective recruit (espescially one that is 6-11).

Actually, I was asking "how so" because new NCAA rules forbid such a thing (I call it the "Kansas rule" :D). In fact, CU is now prohibited from taking any kid from that HS for two years. If Vanderloo was hired as an asst coach instead of the DOBO position, that new rule wouldn't apply, but unfortunately, that isn't the case.

Besides, if we were hiring to get a kid, it would have been Adam Woodbury from that Sioux City HS we were trying to snag, not Mading Thok. 8)

          NCAA Bylaw 11.4.2:

“In men’s basketball, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete’s anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete’s actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (or enter into a contract for future employment with) an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position.”

It goes on to say: ?”If an institution hires an IAWP [individual associated with a prospect] for a noncoaching staff position within two years on either side of enrollment, involved S/A will be permanently ineligible for competition at offending institution.”

          • That's actually a good by-law. It keeps the KU's of the world from hiring HS/AAU coaches and player's fathers/mothers to be DOBO, video coordinator, basketball administrative assistant, assistant trainer in charge of ankle tape or weight room spotter.

It is a good by-law, but it raises the question of why CU is hiring this guy as their DOBO. Even if they like him a lot, why would you hire someone who closes off recruiting avenues when there are plenty of qualified people you could hire for the position?

              • I am guessing it's kind of like hiring an intern. The guy is probably a good HS coach and has potential as a D1 assistant. So you get him into your program, get his feet wet and perhaps promote him someday when an assistant leaves.

It's also possible that they still hired him for his contacts elsewhere. They'll just have to wait a couple of years to begin realizing the benefits of recruiting kids from that high school.

                • If he's been a successful coach in that area for that long, it makes sense in the long run. Iowa produces some good talent and CU spends a lot of time recruiting there. This cuts off one school for a couple of years but could still be of some benefit to a number of others.

Because having a nominee for last year's national HS coach of the year could be pretty valuable at practice? Because they like him and he's really well respected? Not all hirings are made because of what they can provide on the recruiting front! Unlike a lot of hirings, this guy is actually a pretty well respected coach.

Look, it is only one high school. We weren't going to get Woodbury anyway and we weren't really all that interested in Thok. I think his coaching skills, experience and connections throughout Iowa will more than make up for whatever we lose from that particular HS for two years.

Fair enough. Do you know what his career aspirations are? Will he be happy just being a DOBO, or does he hope to shortly move on to an assistant (or eventually head) coaching position somewhere in the collegiate ranks?
