  • All-time best coaches at WSU:

    1) Miller (not Harry)
    2) Smithson (not Randy)
    3) Turgeon
    4) Fogler - with Smithson's recruits
    5) Marshall
    6) Thompson (not Scott)

Miller (not Harry) moved on, but left a F4 team here.

Smithson (not Randy) was fired for mostly off-court issues. I don't blame him for the probation. Most of the offenses were under Harry Miller. Those were mostly minor. The biggie was Ozell Jones forged HS transcript, which was traced to his HS and not to the WSU staff.

Turgeon - S16, Valley championship, and outstanding character of recruits should keep him high on this list. His KU background (and perceived pro-BCS bias), a couple of recruiting year busts, and the loss of an incoming class when he left will forever tarnish his reputation among some Shocker fans.

Fogler - I hate to have him above Marshall because he only succeeded with Smithson's recruits. His own recruits were less than stellar He did recruit some really tall guys who I assume turned out to be great engineers because that was their major and they were really smart.

Marshall - I think he will move up on this list. He's going to need to win some NCAA games to do that.

Thompson (no Scott) - Got a F4 with Miller(not Harry)'s team. Then was let go because he couldn't win.

Yeah, there's a losing coach who was fired on WSU's top 5 all-time coaches. The F4 puts him there. The rest of the coaches WSU has had took WSU into the abyss.

WSU's basketball history has a lot of national prominence. It also has about the same amount of absolute mediocrity or worse.

I'm not a big Turgeon fan, and I'm unlikely to even care how he does at Maryland, but in the last 60 or so years, he's one of the best to ever pace the sidelines of the Roundhouse.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

I hope he stays for a long time and I hope Turgeon found a job where he can stay at for a long time and not be like his mentor, Larry Brown.
I don't think it has anything to do with him leaving. Most everybody knew he'd leave at some point. Hell, as soon as the aTm job popped up I was pretty sure he was gone and had no problem with that. I simply don't see the problem with people voicing honest issues with him. If others are going to throw out all the good, someone is going to bring up the bad. That's how it always has and pretty much always will work on a message board.

When 3G decides to move on, I'm betting that he'll be highly thought of no matter where his career takes him. Yes, some negatives will probably be brought up from time to time, but I don't think it'll be anything like we always have when Turgeon's name comes around. He could do something to change that in the future, but I doubt it.

        • very interesting discussion. I'd give Turgeon fairly high marks for most things, including the drastic turnaround, but I doubt he was going to really stay here long. I also think he's NEVER going to be at KU...I don't think his resume impresses them over his pedigree.

And I'll say it...I 'd be somewhat surprised if Marshall retires here...BUT I think it has to be a special job to get him to leave.

          • I'm willing to give credit for what he did while he was here. But he left here with several failed recruiting classes and took a WSU recruit with him. Makes you wonder what those last minute calls he and Spin made were all about.

So maybe Turg enhanced WSU's image, he left the cupboard mostly bare, see the big he took with him. We won this year with just two Turgeon recruits and neither played with Turgeon. All of this year is on Marshall.

Kung Wu If you don't think Turgeon is becoming A BCS tool just read his recent comments a little more slowly so they will sink in.

John Cooper and Paul Guffrovich? Arguably 2 of the best 25 players in the history of the program (Coop is a no doubter imho).

Certainly he had his Phil Mendelsons and Darrin Duggers, but still.

                • Fogler's recommendation of Cohen is enough to take him out of being one of WSU's best.

I can never counter this fact.

                      • According to HoopDirt early names for Penn State are Jeff Lebo of East Carolina, Marshall's Tom Herrion, and Fran Dunphy of Temple.

                        • For my two cents, I think MT's +'s far outweigh his negatives.
Besides, there is no such thing as a perfect coach. They all have warts, including GM.

Personally, I enjoy seeing successful WSU coaches/Assistant coaches starting to dot the BCS ranks as head coaches. Don't like to see them go any more than you do, but that, as least, has been life in the so called - mid-majors.

No way this can hurt us in the future when the AD is looking for a replacement coach and can point to past WSU coaches who have been successful here and have now gone on to future success.
