  • Shocks vs Cougars with MSG Trip On The Line

Here is a write-up on the CofC Cougars from the CofCfans.com message board:

CofC has had a pretty good season though everyone is bummed that we did not go to the NCAA. We played a brutal schedule including road games at Maryland, UNC, Tennessee and Morehead St. Neutral game agains URI. We should have beaten Maryland as we were winning the entire game and lost on a buzzer beater. UNC we were up 5 with 7-8 to go and ran out of gas in the last five minutes(lost by 5). Crushed Tennessee on ESPN and then went to MSU a few days later and got manhandled by Kenneth Faried(don't feel so bad about that one now). We were cruising through the SOCON until we lost our senior center Simmons. Didn't really have the depth for the SOCON tournament and lost in the final to Wofford whom we had beaten by 25 just one month prior.

Goudelock is the primary engine of our offense. He can hit just about any shot. From the ultra deep three to the runner in the lane. He isn't lightning quick but is quick enough. If you choose to single cover him then he will get his 25-30 points. Drew is pretty unselfish and his point totals would be higher had he not made a concerted effort to get others involved and push his assist total up.

Monroe is our other senior. Jack of all trades guy that moved to pg this season. After some bumps in the road he has really come on late and is a solid defender. When given open looks he has been hitting shots of late.

Wiggins is our 3 redshirt junior. BCS size and athleticism. Unfortunately still not completely polished has a penchant for the boneheaded turnover or bad jumshot. Tore his ACL and was out all last year. I think he is a half a step slower since. As a freshman and sophmore he chased Steffen Curry all around the court. I believe Wiggins guarded Curry as well as anyone in the country and helped CofC take 2 of 3 from Davidson during Curry's final season.

Hall- Meat and Potatoes 4 sophmore. Undersized and underathletic. Does a lot of little things, sets great screens for Goudelock. Gets a lot of open looks when Drew is doubled. Struggles against elite big men.

Weideman- Freshman sensation. Trent has been thrust into the starting lineup after our senior All Socon center had a freakish blood clot one month ago. At first glance doesn't look like much, but is deceptively quick and very polished. Also has a solid shooting touch. Trent has no fear whatsover.

Main sub will be Lawrence sophmore. Starting PG for the youth British national team. Tenacious defender, good ballhandler kind of in a shooting slump lately.

Toure', love him unconditionally or love him with reservations, may very well be the key to this game.

My guess is he will have primary responsibility for defending Andrew Goudelock, who by all accounts is a tremendous offensive talent.

Hopefully, the Shocks have bought in to what it takes for them to be successful and will be able to continue their quality play.

I get the sense that we will be fielding a "Florida State" kind of crowd for Wednesday. Never know how that will impact the other team. Sometimes it simply inspires them as much as it does the Shocks.

I think this will be a very good college basketball game.

A nail-biter would not surprise me at all. I hope they have a few of those portable cardiac difribrillators on hand at the arena.

The Shockers were one of the other schools recruiting Trent Weideman.

Here is one oddsmaker's take on the game:

All of the odds makers are giving WSU a slight edge in this game. It seems to boil down to our defense vs. C of C's offense, and rebounding.

Are they a better rebounding team than us?

No they aren't and it isn't even close.

On the season the have a rebound margin of -0.6 per game and we have a rebound margin of +7.9.

In addition, Jeremy Simmons, their second leading rebounder on the year at 6.2 per game, as mentioned above is out with injury.

From the stats site, and by the accounts above, they seem to have a potent offense. Hopefully that's padded by being in a conference with weaker defense than average (I have no idea how look that up).

"both players struggled in front of scouts from several NBA teams. Goudelock, the Southern Conference Player of the Year was 3 of 12 from the field, and missed all six of his 3-point attempts."

                      So, he's due. Great.

Yea, very unlikely that Goudelock will play that poorly again. The sharpshooters always seem to be finely honed when they visit Koch Arena.

Shocks will need to play a very solid game to continue their season.

That is NOT decided yet. It may end up that way, but the decision is based on outcomes of the games tonight.

                              Is there a certain scenario?

For example: Team A wins, we play at 6, Team B wins, we play at 8?
