  • NCAA Tournament Invitations

Just for kicks, what mid major programs would have been invited to the dance if you weren't required to invite conference tournament champions or auto qualifiers?

George Mason? I can't think of many others that would have been invited off the top of my head. So we would have 67 BCS teams playing for a championship.

    Just interested in opinions.

Restate the question, not sure what you mean. Isn't that the at-large teams? BYU, VCU, etc.

Take out the auto qualifiers and there's probably a 60-40 split with the remaining spots, IMO. MoSt gets in, for one.

Pick and choose which teams you want to call "mid-majors", but all of these teams would have made it.

      George Mason
      Old Dominion
      Virginia Commonwealth
      Butler
      Xavier
      Memphis
      Temple
      San Diego State
      BYU
      UNLV
      Gonzaga
      Utah State
      Richmond

      - - - - - - - -

Also, teams like WSU, MSU, Moorhead State, Harvard, Cleveland State, New Mexico, St. Mary's, etc. would have probably/possibly made it since we were replacing auto-bids with the next best teams left out.

UNLV looked absolutely terrible yesterday. Gets my vote for most underachieving first round performance.

Tennessee was bad but I expected that to happen.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but when given a chance to look back on the first weekend, I am struck by the following items:

VCU and UAB were HAMMERED in the media for their inclusion into the tournament.....UAB might have deserved it (I'm not sure) but VCU has stepped forth and proved themselves.

Southern Cal and Penn State received no such treatment. Penn State played either ZERO or 1 non-conference road game....and can only claim wins over Wisconsin (2 times) as really good wins. How they got in with maybe 2 or 3 road wins is beyond me. They did lose to some really good teams and that's why they got in. Why didn't they get the same scrutiny?

USC had 5 non-conference losses including Kansas. However the other 4 were to Rider (at home by 20) last place MVC team Bradley, @ Nebraska and @ LAST PLACE MWC Texas Christian. Yes they beat Texas, but that appears to be the formula for BCS teams (except Colorado).... .500 is ok if you can get one good win.

Also, Villanova was given a BIG pass. Losing 6 straight going into the tournament... .500 in the league...very average non-conference schedule. They did play Monmouth, LaSalle and Penn on the road, but 2 of those road games barely qualify as road games. It seems there are 2 sets of rules.

          Clemson also gets a pass.
