VCU has played much better than I expected in the tournament.

I apologize if this has already been brought up but I have been reading the board the last few weeks and haven't seen anyone point out the eerie similarities to our record this year and our record in the 2005-06 campaign. The pre post season record was 24-8 in both years. I have listed the losses below. The wins are against similar grade opponents also. The only conclusion that i can come up with as to why we received a 7 seed then and are playing in the NIT this year is that the Valley as a whole had a Non-conference record much better than it did this season. All I've got to say is that I hope the conference as a whole improves in the coming years. I would like to the Valley getting at least 2 bids in the NCAA's again.

        05-06 losses
        #15 Illinois
        #14 Michigan State
        4 MVC conference losses
loss in bracketbuster to CAA opponent
        2nd MVC Tourney game

        2010-2011 losses
        UConn currently # 9
        SDSU currently # 6
        4 MVC conference losses
loss in bracketbuster to CAA opponent
        2nd MVC Tourney game
Shocker fan for life after witnessing my first game in person, the 80-74 win over the #12 Creighton Bluejays at the Kansas Coliseum.

The difference is those conference games. In 2006 we had 5 conference members finish in the top 50 in rpi. We also had a few more in the top 100.

This year only MO St finished in the top 50 and only WSU and Indy St finished in the top 100.

That is a big difference and is why we got 4 teams in the dance in 2006 (and we got a 7 seed) and only 1 team this year with a 14 seed.

Sounds like some SN'ers are still trying to find anyway that will comfort themselves into believing that this was a "very" successful basketball year. It ain't gonna happen in most people's minds.

IMO, the 2006 team beats this years team by 10+ points easily. I also think that team would have run the table on the Valley this year.

I was only comparing the records, not the teams.

Also I'm not sure that the verdict is out as to whether this season has been a success or not; there is still the potential for a lot of basketball yet to play.

I sometimes feel the 06 team is over valued based on the tournament run. The first round match-up against SH was an absolute give me. The at large field that year would have a 90 percent winning percentage against SH....

no, not trying to reconcile this to a 'great 'season...but more of'how close this truly was'...with some better finishes at home.

Don't get me wrong, I still think there is a slim chance they can turn this season into a success (it's going to involve a trip to NYC though). I was only pointing out that while the records may be similar, the 2006 wins in the Valley hold much more weight.

They won the regular season MVC title by 2 games in probably the best year the conference has had in 20 years. The sweet 16 was just icing on the cake for me.

Even if we win the NIT, this season will still be a huge failure in my mind.

I always felt that VCU was never given enough credit. They are a very athletic team and can play some ball. They are a better team than us at least the night we played them anyway.

The verdict is already out - this season is a disappointment.

Another march and another year where WSU is not participating in March Madness. We are left with a WSU playing on a sunday morning at 10am in the Not Important Tournament.
