Supposedly, being in a better conference would increase our chances to recruit better athletes due to increased media and TV exposure. We still would have to win as the conference competition would also be better.
In the long run, it boils down to what do we realistically want and expect WSU to achieve in BB? Note: There is nothing scientifc about the numbers or comments provided below.
National Championship? Sure that is what we all want, but it is not going to happen during my lifetime and undoubtedly during any of yours.
Final Four? - Same as above - The BB map and the MVC has drastically changed for the worst since we achieved this one time accomplishment many years ago. Unfortunately, we stood pat, like we are doing today, and did not change, nor move forward with the times.
Elite Eight - A very, very slim chance if we retain the status quo.
Sweet 16 - Perhaps once every 25-30 years if we get lucky
NCAA Selection/Top 25 Rating - In my opinion, this school with all its resources should achieve this goal at least every five years, but we don't. It is going to depends on what future road we take. Once every 3-10 years if we change conferences. Perhaps once every 10 - 25 years if we don't.
Of course things could dramatically change and we could perhaps become the dominating premier BB school in the MVC if the few current better conference schools leave for greener pastures. Like the cream of the Valley did many years ago. Perhaps, then we could frequently win the tournament championship and dominate the automatic berth.
No matter what, Shocker BB is always exiting and certainly challenging. During the last 20 some years we have had a lot of challenges. A few have been terrific and some less than hoped. I do not have a single arguement with any of you who are satisfied with the last 20 years or even the last ten. We have gone during these years from being below average to (in my opinion) a level of mediocrity. I just keep hoping we can someday achieve more.
We can all agree we need to schedule better, but none of us on SN matter, it is the athletic department that has to do something about it. The problem is how to get the athletic department to listen to us, and to take action, and not be satisfied with the status quo.
The communication lines between the public and the athletic department are non-existent as far as I know. I just don't have the confidence in Eric Sexton like I did in Jim Schaus.
