  • Annual STL Notes, Quotes & Billygoats

Another great time was had by The Mentor and Yours Truly.

The overall experience was tempered by Saturday's disappointment, but that happens when you go with high expectations.

To be a bit more blunt, Saturdays' game was a buzz kill.

Without further delay, here are our unscientific and totally biased observations.

Best Player - Jake Odum. He hits big time shots, runs the show and is first class grit. He will be no fun to deal with for the next 3 years.
Special mention to Echenique & McDermott, who will both a load in the paint for the next couple of years.

Worst player - Toure Murry. He obviously did not want to be there.

I've never seen a player who's mind was no where near the ScottTrade. It wasn't even in Missouri. I'm thinking somewhere between Mars and Pluto.

Best Coach - How do you top Lansing?
He motivated, pushed all the right buttons and kept his composure. He did what a Coach is supposed to do.

His adjustments were what impressed us.
He analyzed the opponent and then made necessary adjustments.
    What a concept!

Worst Coach - Jankovich. We did not attend the the Thursday night games. However, our spy in the sky informed us a team was there wearing Illinois State uniforms. However, we learned they were impostors and the real team was competing in the Summit League Tournament, which is the level of scheduling TJ prefers.

Special Mention to Chris Lowery. His handling of the last two minutes against MSU was a classic choke job.

Best Fans - This sounds like a homer job, but WSU fans were awesome. Absolutely awesome.
It's a shame to what they were exposed to on Saturday, but it is what it is.

Worst fans - InSU. Just think of MSU fans - only 10 times worse. They make the 'Billies from Springfield look like MENSA members.

Special mention to the drunken retard from InSU who dumped beer on DUBulldog and his wife, then wanted to fight about it. After hitting DUBulldog, he then slugged a WSU fan and was finally arrested.

Best Cheerleaders - 3 way tie between WSU, Bradley & UNI. None were special, but they didn't get hurt either.

    Worst Cheerleaders - Creighton.
What was up with those uni's? I thought Scotty had beamed me back to 1978. The only thing missing was big hair & leg warmers.

Best Dance Team - Well, the time had to come and it finally did.
The 12 time champions from Illinois State have been dethroned. We went for UNI, not because they were that good, but the decline of ISU.

Apparently, Jankovich's scheduling has affected the entire school. The prominent feature of the ISU dance team was muffin tops.

They looked like they just came from working the 3rd shift @ the Betty Crocker factory (and eating most of the product).

Note to ISU Dance team Leader - We missed the usual standard. Get your act together and return sanity to the many who enjoy the show.

Worst Dance team - InSU. I've never seen that many big A$$es in black spandex. It looked more like a weight watchers dance session to us.
A lady behind us even mentioned they should have danced to the song "I like Big Butts." They were brutal.

Got to meet SNer's Pinstripes and SF8.

Gents, it was a pleasure to finally meet you.

    That is all. 8)
Above all, make the right call.

Someone for sure hit the InSU cheerleaders with the ugly stick. They must pick them based un the number of back handsprings they can do in a row.

From a UNI fan "WSU basketball is like the guy thats finally going to get laid with the hottest chick ever. He blows his load before he begins. She is pissed, Your Pissed, and you have to say Sorry."

Security told us to quit doing the "shocker" with our hands. That they had a meeting specifically about WSU and our hand gesture.
"First off, it was great to come here and play. It was a great atmosphere - an unbelievable home court. What great basketball fans in Wichita. This city has a lot to be proud of with fans like that." Coach Bobby Cremmins

There have been many, many complaints about the hand gesture. If it causes such trouble, why not quit doing it. I know what it is suppose to symbolize, but it misses the mark. Just quit already.

I know its probably not as "clever" as some think the hand gesture in question is, but why not hold up middle-ring-pinky with the thumb over the pointer? Basically its the referee's signal for a 3 point attempt, but hey, it looks like a W too! You could even hold them up to the sides of your head and make W antlers. But if that version (W antlers) gets interpreted as a rack will the Scottrade Center police get in a tizzy?

I was on the student bus trip that went to St. Louis. The WSU staffers with us petitioned the security guards at Scottrade about the Shocker after hearing about WSU fans being told not to do it. Friday night, they said they spoke with ADES and on Saturday we were told by the head of security for our section that our "hand gesture" was fine.

I really don't think it's offensive. There are plenty of things our fans chant that I think need to go before anyone starts worrying about the flying W. The "you suck #####" bit being No. 1 on that list.

I rather like, "you suck" and also, "you still suck." I think that is clever. But the "you suck b@lls" is just stupid.

Whether the WSU students who go to the games (which, by the way, is a real minority) think it is offensive is not the question. I don't think you will find many outside the student section at Koch using the hand gesture. The problem is what the other 100 Million U.S. population think. And most think it is offensive, particularly with the way it is thrown out there when the camera gets close. Do you really want what is perceived by a great deal of people as offensive associated with your team and university? I don't. And as to the chants "our fans" chant --- the students are the ones that start those chants, so that is where the solution needs to start.

If only 100 million of the United States population thinks that the Shocker is offensive, then we don't have a problem. They are far in the minority.

I have no illusions about the fact that the chants happening in the student section were either invented or perpetuated by students. It does not mean that I appreciate some of the ones that have caught on.

The reason why I defend the use of the Shocker, even though the symbol we use isn't technically the Shocker, is that it's easily the most unique thing that our fans do.

                  Is that our fault? Absolutely.

However, the idea of not being able to do that was something that ALL of the WSU fans (primarily students) I was with thought was ridiculous. They were not happy about the fact that the Scottrade staff was pretty vigilant about seeking out people who were yelling swear words, but weren't fighting it.

What they did get upset about was the fact that they were trying to take away "our thing." Until something else is thought of and catches on, this is simply the truth.

Does even 10% of this country know what the "shocker" gesture is or means?

This is what I have thought would make the most sense also. This looks more like a W than the Shocker anyway, although I've always thought the "Hey it's a W" was a smoke screen anyway.

I realize this subject is taboo, but the solution seems simple.

                        W :goshocks: W

I agree they don't know what it is supposed to represent -- but the way it looks when presented some could take offense to or they ask "What the hell is that?" I think most think it either is supposed to be offensive or they think it is just plain stupid. If most people think a hand gesture is offensive whether it is meant to be or not -- then I say get rid of it.

Most people would have no idea why it would ever be thought of as offensive unless they know someone who's read urbandictionary.com. Some find it offensive. Most have no idea why that is or have even considered it as such.
