  • Shocker Crowd Traditions

This topic has been visited many times (even just last month). Why does this topic continue to be visited? Why does it seem like we are beating a dead horse?

We clap in rhythm. We get loud when we either like what we are seeing or absolutely need to in order to help the Shockers get back in the game.

Charles Koch Arena is one of the loudest and toughest places to play in the nation. It has been noted by coaches and sports journalists from all over. HOWEVER...we can do BETTER!!! The students are trying to keep the crowd going. It's tough to do without more traditions/chants.

I challenge ALL students in the student section and anyone out there in Shocker Nation to come up with chants and when we will do it at every, single home game.

For Example: During timeouts or with 5 minutes left in the game sections 101-116 scream YELLOW and, in response, sections 117-126 scream BLACK! It starts out slow and gets faster and faster...and then starts over until the game is over (especially during timeouts). Yes, we chant Go Shox but it's been done. Everyone chants Go (insert team name).

Another Example: Find a way to incorporate chanting M...T...X...E at some point in the game.

STUDENTS and anyone on Facebook... This is your chance to make history. Use Social Networking and create a chant. Let's take our noise and passion and take it to the next level.

To the WSU Shocker Maniacs: Create a competition for new chants/cheers at Shocker home games. Then make instructions and distribute thousands of copies of the instructions at the game. Talk to the Center for Student Leadership for ideas.

The Shockers need our help to finish strong this season! We need to win all of our home games...especially the Bracketbuster vs. VCU.

LET'S GO!!! MTXE!!! EVERYONE (not just students) need to do these. Wear YELLOW & BLACK and become THE toughest place to play in the nation!!!
Begin with the end in mind.

Like you and others have said. We get loud during times we absolutely HAVE to but overall the crowd has been pretty bad this year. The team had to learn to play with a lead, maybe the crowd does to. If the Shox are up by 10+ it's not time to sit back and relax. Keep the momentum going and make some noise...any noise. Only time the crowd has been significant is in tight games. That's important, but there should always be some cheering and clapping going on to try and help the Shox keep the momentum. It does start with the student section. Most of the time they try to do a good job, but I agree having some more creativity would help out alot.

I'm not sure how anyone gets this to change. Posting here is pretty much just "preaching to the choir". But it is rather irritating. I don't know that we have the best atmosphere in the Valley right now. UNI has been rocking pretty good when I've seen them on TV and so has MSU. We should be bringing it every night as well!

Speaking of atmosphere, what in the hell was up with that song being played after the team took the floor? It's like someone went through and read the old posts about the music being "unclappable" and the person in charge said, "unclappable, I'll show you unclappable."

            That was God awful.

            Another game production FAIL.

I do agree that the crowds seem either spoiled or bored. We have a pretty good team going here. The students are half as good as the ones in the mid-2000's were.

Need to stir the pot a little bit before we blow our chance to show our support for the guys before a possible chance in the NCAA's.

Any crowd will be quiet wth the game in hand. With 16 min left. The 2 close games came on bad weather night with some stretches of bad Shocker play and there has still been sellout and recognition from national media.
I love when the roof has been blowing off that place, just wasn't appropriate tonight.

The students try really hard. What's up with the No Fun police in red t-shirts anyway? My gawd, we got away with everything back in the day and then just got called into Dean Ratigan's office on Monday. "Yes sir. No sir. No, we won't do that again, sir."

There are an overwhelming number of "social" Shocker fans now. The silver spoon crowd who ponied-up the big bucks to build the arena don't seem to have an emotional investment in the program and sit the whole game, clap politely, and leave early. They are definitely spoiled and bored, but then again, they didn't have to suffer through Mike Cohen and Scott Thompson.

I took a friend tonight who doesn't Shocker games and he was impressed witih the crowd. When I told him it can be three times louder and sustained, he wouldn't believe me.

BTW, while the game production still blows, kudos to the band for bringing it tonight. I prefer the bend 100% over the recorded music.

Would the place be loud on 2/23 if by some chance we have a two game lead and we can clinch the league at home vs. sCUm? Not looking ahead ... but whoa Nellie.

Back on topic - doing the social media thing might be a good idea. While many (most) of my generation don't play much on the Twitter or Facebook, rallying the younger fans in that way seems to work. Knock yourself out and see what happens. Once it gains steam, it will catch on with most of the rest of the fans.

I haven't noticed the red shirts. I suffered through Cohen & ThompsonM I had my experiences with Ratigan's office & IFC. Those experiences were fun & were comically hypocritical. What's the difference now?

The past two homes games haven't been the best games for overall crowd participation.

That Bradley game was honest to God the most boring game I've ever seen/attended. I was swearing at Jim Les at every timeout and some free throws trips.

So pissed that he was wasting the first 20 seconds of the shot clock... even when Bradley was down 10 or more!

It was so depressing. After a while I just saved my breath and voice for the final 15 seconds of the shot clock because I knew they weren't gonna do s*** until then.

As for the Illinois State game this evening (or yesterday evening I should say):
The big lead made it a little more difficult for some people. I thought the student section did alright... but could have brought more.

I agree with the original posters thoughts.
Those Ideas are good... now, if someone with charisma could start it off.
i always enjoy when we pull the 'ole "GO SHOX" where we split the two words between sections.
The YELLOW BLACK idea sounds awesome.

Just need the right guy to start it.
I'm sorry to say, but I'm not that guy.

As mentioned before the Creighton game will likely be loud early and often. Even the non-hardcore shocker students seem to know that the Creighton game is ... where records, stats, pasts, futures, stakes... all go out the window. All that's left is loathing :)

The SIU game is likely to be ... a snooze fest I'm willing to bet.

The student section has been good at best during a couple games. At the start of the games when they yell "you suck" or "who cares", to each player being announced.. Not every knows what to yell, and how could they. The guys that are in the front row of every game need to get control of the section. Type out something and put it in everyones seat, your obviously there early enough anyway.

It seems like half of the times the crowd stands and starts clapping, is when the band plays during a timeout. Then the game starts and everyone says, oh crap..better sit down for the game.

In the first half when the visiting team is shooting free throws toward the other side of the court, would it be so hard for the fans to wave there arms or something? I see a few fans wave an arm, but they don't even have to stand.. just wave your arms.

The students have gotten really bad about shouting during the opponents players introductions. I can't even hear what they are saying.
