  • NCAA Bids and Snubs

I was going through the MVC 2011 Media Guide and came across some interesting tidbits of information about the MVC and ncaa bids and snubs:

The Valley had 18 teams finish in the top 50 in rpi between 1991 and 2004, 16 of them received ncaa bids. The only two that did not were SMS in 1997 (42 rpi) and SMS in 2000 (rpi 34).

Since 2005, 21 Valley teams have finished in the top 47 of the rpi and 11 of them received bids. 10 did not: 2005- WSU (45 rpi); 2006- SMS- (21 rpi), Creighton (39 rpi); 2007- SMS (36), Bradley (37); 2008- Creighton (40), Illinois St. (47): 2010- Wichita State- (43 rpi).

The Media Guide noted that in 2009 Creighton (rpi 40) was the first team in the history of the ncaa to have more than 25 wins and finish in the top 50 of the rpi and NOT make the tourney (They were also regular season co-champs).

Missouri State was the first team with a 29 or better rpi to not make the tourney (2006- 21 rpi).

During the last 11 years only 17 teams with an rpi of 40 or better have not made the tourney. 7 of those 17 teams were from the Valley.

The Valley has finished in the top 9 of conference rpi for the last six years. The Valley finished 7th last year, and it was the first time since the rpi started that the 7th ranked conference did NOT receive multiple bids.

The Valley was only the third #8 conference to not receive multiple bids in 2009 (the year co-champ CU was snubbed with 26 wins). The other two were the Mountain West in 2001 and 2007 (another non-BCS conference).

The top two rpi teams that got left out of the tournament in 2010 were Rhode Island (#40 in rpi) and Wichita State (#43).

It appears to me from these stats from the Valley media guide that the BCS bias has grown in recent years.

Some interesting FINAL 4 stats from the Valley media guide:

Missouri Valley Conference members have made 16 appearances in the final 4 (I had no idea there have been that many).

A MVC member has won the national championship 4 times, finished second 5 times, third 4 times and fourth 3 times.

Four of the current MVC members have played in the final 4: Bradley in 1954, they lost in the first national championship game to be televised nationally; WSU in 1965; Drake in 1969- lost to eventual national champion UCLA by 3 but then went on to beat North Carolina by 20 to win the third place game; and in 1979 Indiana State and Larry Bird lost to Michigan St in the national championship game.

1979 was the first year they seeded the entire tournament and Indiana State was the #1 seed.

I knew about WSU and Indy St, I didn't know Drake and Bradley had also been to the final 4.

Sounds like there's something wrong with the system, not the Valley.

RPI is not much of a ranking system. Does anybody think we got snubbed either time we were on that list?

In the 2009 season, Creighton didn't really have a signature win. I just pulled their sked, and their biggest wins were over New Mexico, who didn't make the tournament, and Dayton, who won one game at the tournament.

You guys know that I think there is a bias toward at-large MVC teams, but this one doesn't surprise me for some reason. Although, CU won 11 of their last 12, and that's supposedly one of the factors.

In comparing the two time periods, is there any difference in the percentage of high RPI teams who also won in St. Louis? Meaning, did the Valley teams with high RPIs always win the tourney and ensure their trip to the big dance between 1991 and 2004?

I remember watching the Drake game on TV as a kid. It is one of my earliest memories of the final 4 (My first real memory of the final 4 was the Texas Western- Kentucky game a couple years earlier I believe).

Drake had a real good team for about 3 years in a row during that time. I also remember watching Drake lose to Ku on TV in the Midwest regional final I think the next year after their final 4 appearance.

Unfortunatley I was too young to really remember the WSU final 4 appearance, but my Dad would tell me all about it. I do remember watching Dave Stallworth play for the NY Knicks.
