  • TCU Pitching Phenom

The freshman TCU pitching phenom, Matt Purke, seems to be an anomaly.

I can't remember seeing a first round draft pick turn down the dollar offer (a reported $4 million in this case) to sign to play college ball. Mauer certainly forgot about FSU as soon as he received that first round offer.

Purke is 14-0, has a 97 mph fast ball and has 133 strike outs to 28 walks. He hasn't hurt his creds. Against the Longhorns, he pitched 7 2/3 innings, struck out 11, and allowed one run.

Hard to believe that he is pitching in college rather than the minors....$4 million (he turned down $4 million and it was reported that he entertained $6 million) would be seem to be hard to walk past.

I surely don't know his thinking, but watching him pitch should be fun.

Is he the one who wears his hat kind of cockeyed?

      LOL...

I'm so old school that I'm trying to get used to the big flat bills on the caps.

Nope...not cockeyed. But he looks strange with those big nerdy black glasses with tape at the temples.

That's him. I swear against the Evil Empire last weekend his lid was turned about 2-3 inches towards right ear, and with the glasses he looked awfully goofy. But then again, so did Fidrych. Maybe it was to keep the sun out of his eyes better considering how the field there faces.

I Cleveland Indians devono assolutamente battere i New York Yankees ed ecco che al nono inning chiamano in campo il lanciatore Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen)

Interestingly...Purke wasn't pitcher of the year in the MWC....

TCU is throwing that pitcher, Maxwell (11-2 2.45 ERA) in the game today. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Purke come in on three days rest in the late innings.

FSU doesn't have a matching pitcher, unfortunately, and will need a great deal of luck to hang close. But, to be one of the last six teams standing ain't too bad, and is much more than we expected out of this club.
