BOCA RATON, Fla. -- FIU's Garrett Wittels has matched the second-longest hitting streak in Division I history, getting a hit in his 47th straight game Friday night against Florida Atlantic.
Wittels tied Wichita State's Phil Stephenson, who hit in 47 straight games in 1981. Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura holds the NCAA record with a 58-game streak in 1987.
Wittels hit a third-inning single to left field off FAU's Mike Gipson, after getting hit by a pitch in the first inning. He has a hit in every game he's played this season, entering Friday with a .408 batting average.
