  • Baseball Polls (3/8/10)

Collegiate Baseball - WSU climbs to 21 (24th last week)

No other credible polls out (e.g. rivals).

  • #2
WSU is not ranked in Baseball America or Rivals (big surprise). The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association & USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls haven't been released yet.

Seems like the (generally most-respected) BA poll is all but impossible for WSU to get into, if we're not in the poll somewhere at the beginning of the season. At least that's my opinion as a life-long college baseball poll watcher. There's been many a year that our BA ranking varies greatly (in the wrong direction) from the other major polls.

Poll inertia is tough to overcome. If we can lose either 0 or 1 game this week, I'm sure we will sneak into BA. Their voters give disproportionate weight to games on the coasts.

The next two weeks will go a very long ways toward determining our ceiling in the polls this season. The LBS, AZ, and Wash State series will either catapult us into potential hosting territory or cement us in the 2-3 seed range.

Of course, taking care of business before and after that stretch is important too ;-)

We are #23 in this one. And Ping is better than Rivals IMO.

Long Beach State is 4-6 and a bit down. That needs to be a sweep.

Arizona is ok, but Washington State appears to be the real deal.
            Deuces Valley.
            ... No really, deuces.

probably not clear above, but I DO NOT think rivals is credible.

WSU is at 30 in the coaches poll. I suspect that BA is waiting to see what WSU does on their western road trip.

Boyd's world has WSU at 22 in the RPI.Way too early to care but it is interesting.

                    from BA

Chuck (Wichita): Any love for the Shockers?

Aaron Fitt: Two good weekends in a row for the Shockers, which have certainly put themselves in the rankings discussion after taking two of three from a good Florida Gulf Coast club. I really like Wichita's pitching staff.

The Wash St. series will go a long way in showing us the Shox's potential..

So will this west coast swing we are going on. Any road game is tough and we are playing two traditional powerhouses (despite the fact they are a bit down thus far this year). However, I'm thinking we should take 4 of 5 but you never know.

Of note, Long Beach beat Arizona twice this year so if we take Long Beach I'll feel good about facing Zona. But we all know how that math works out sometimes.

The thing that can really bite you when playing these teams is a really superior stud starter (i.e. Jared Weaver a few years back), especially in the first game after long travel and time zone difference.

I don't know anything about LBSU or 'Zona pitching. 4 wins should make us all happy. A 3-2 roadie would be a marginal success. Anything less will be bad.

Although it is still early it is none the less interesting that after we beat Long Beach 8-0, warren nolan pegged our rpi at 11.
