  • Media Day

Well it was media day for basketball, but with everyone together, I wonder if they had a chance to address baseball and thoughts with UNI gone.

Any wish list from fans out there?

      Good stuff!

Now with only 8 teams in conference, I wonder if they will adjust (yet again) how they do the MVC Tournament and if they do, when will it start?

We know they aren't changing the conference series back to 4 games, at least not this season. While 4 game series virtually assures a championship for WSU 90+% of the time, it does nothing to help our team improve. That is one change I don't want to see. As long as the Shocks continue to carry this pathetic league on it's broad shoulders, I am tired of helping out little brother. Let everyone else come to us.

Don't they have to? I mean WSU won the tournament last year so therefore something must be done about, because lets face it - it is just not fair if WSU continues to win everything in the league for baseball.

Changes to the MVC tournament is now an annual thing - it's almost like Halloween.

          ORU

Someone brought up the idea several mos ago of adding ORU to the MVC. They are strong in both baseball and basketball, and it gives someone closer to WSU an opponent for road games.

I'd take both ORU and St Louis U.

I wonder if ORU in the league would enhance it at all for Tulsa?

My wish list still involves WSU getting the hell out of the MVC (at least for baseball). WSU is pretty much right in the mix for basketball, but is in another universe in baseball year-in and year-out and needs consistently better competition. Stuff like "... carry this pathetic league on it's broad shoulders..." and "...helping out little brother..." pretty much sum up my feelings with regard to WSU and MVC baseball. Something needs to be done about sub-par facilities and bad scheduling around the league. Only WSU, MSU, and sCUm try hard at fielding competitive programs. WSU is the elite program, MSU and sCUm are the wannabes, and the rest just pretend.

For some reason, Ed Servais has way too much voice in the way MVC baseball is run, probably because he is a former big leaguer. Hopefully, the league and the coaches learned their lesson with the adoption of the gawd-awful pool play tournament format that he forced down their throats last season. Dumb, dumb idea. Playing meaningless games on the third day of the tournament was just pitiful.

4-game series would really SUCK. All it would do is pull down the RPI's of WSU and the wannabe programs every season. Having better quality mid-week games and an extra weekend to schedule decent competition is far better for the league than the top 3 beating down the bottom 5.

The tournament is schedule for Wed. through Sat. 5/26-5/29. I assume the championship is set for TV, which means there needs to be a little flexibility available in case of weather issues. That could mean some contrived format, which I hope is NOT the case.

The conference tournament should go back to be truly double-elimination. A standard 8-team bracket double-elim tournament is easy. The worst thing is that weather can really screw it up, as there must be 4 games the first two days. Losers have to play up to 6 games - too bad for your pitching staff - don't lose. Winner can win in 4 games. One other realistic format is two 4-team double-elim brackets with a single winner-take-all championship game a la the CWS. One nice thing about the split bracket is that the championship game time can be set and truly be for the championship. Downside is that if both teams advance undefeated, the loser doesn't get a second chance. Both of these formats would probably be better suited to 5 days, but are do-able in 4 if weather isn't a factor. Another argument for 5-day tournament is that it gives a realistic shot at bringing the #1 pitchers back for the championship. Who wouldn't think that is a good idea - showcasing two of the league's best pitchers in the championship round rather than Johnny Wholestaff?

                  You said "wish list", right?

A 6 team double elimination tournament just like the one they used for 20+years is just fine. The only trouble is the media can't seem to under stand how it works after 20+ years. They are DA's

There is talk About Dallas Baptist & ORU joining the MVC.But of course, the best solution would be to BRING BACK SHOCKER FOOTBALL & join a good conference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                        Not realistic.

I have heard a rumor that MVC is going to stay with pool play and will be going to 8 teams, 2 pools for MVC tournament in 2010.

I have heard that rumor in the last couple of days as well.

                              That's really unfortunate.

Weak teams get a 3 game guarantee and I can see lower tier teams saving their "ace" to play the #1 team in their pool.

That could effectively deny the two #1's a shot at the championship round, and give the conference automatic bid to the 3rd place or lower team, potentially damaging the chances of the #1 and #2 conference finishers an NCAA tournament berth. I can't wait for the meaningless games leading to the pool finals.

That would suck, but third rate representative for a 3rd rate league is par for the course. Why change now?
