  • Midwest Regional - WSU vs OU

I was listening to the sports daily pod cast (yesterday). Bob L. had a interesting question - do you start Cooper for Friday game against OU?

Who gives WSU the best chance - Cooper or Kelley? Interesting question in my mind. Each pitcher has his strength and weaknesses.

If I were wagering my paycheck and could choose I'd take Cooper.

Man, haven't heard "Midwest Regional" used in quite a while.

      Those were the days.. 8)

I agree that Cooper would give us the best chance. But messing up the rotation like that could unbalance the chemistry on the team. I think Kelley is due for a good outing and we all know that's who's gonna start.

Sorry to stray a little off topic, but who is (maybe easier to ask who isn't) on the Shocks 25 man post-season roster?

Anyone think OU won't start their #1 pitcher?

Stats-wise, Kelley and Cooper are pretty even.

If you look at the conference-only stats, which would be an indicator of later-in-the-season performance, Kelley has a bit more of an edge in ERA, BB/IP and BAA, which are important.

Cooper's biggest savior is extra base hits allowed - only 15 vs. Kelley's 24 overall (similar difference in conference-only starts). That difference is over 1 extra base hit per start and tells Cooper does a little better job of fooling hitters.

I guess I'd probably go with the guy that was the #1 guy all year in Kelley and the Shox most veteran starter. Plus, Kelley vs. Oklahoma has a little home-state grudge thing going for Kelley in the opener.

In the end, both Kelley and Cooper are CRITICAL to any success the Shox will have at Norman. They have been great all soeaon, but if those two can't hold the fort, it could get ugly real quick.

If I'm looking at the roster right, the Shox only have 27 healthy players. I'd guess Banwart and either Hutson or Maldonado sit out. Maybe Williams, but there aren't many backups in the IF or C.

No real reason for OU to save pitchers - regionals can be won by sweeping 3 games so why not try.

Does OU even have a #1 pitcher? I thought thier plan was just score more than the other team can score (which they are very good at by the way). I think we have faced 2 of their top 3 and since Garrett Richards shut us down I would imagine thats who we will see on Friday even though his ERA is 6.55.

OU fans on Rivals are saying Sunny wants their rotation to be:

                1. Doyle
                2. Rocha
                3. Richards

Also just want to throw out some OU fans want to use their #3 pitcher Richards against us again. Richards pitched 4 innings against us in the 15-zip game & we had a hit, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts . He has pitched 1 inning in the 8-1 game (struck out one).

We saw Rocha in both games. In the 15-0 game, he struck out two in one inning of work. In the 2nd game, he again pitched 1 inning and struck out one.

                :wsu_posters:

I noticed Gene said in the paper OU should use their 8th or 9th pitcher. ;)

I pulled this stat up from goshockers.com:

Wichita State is 0-12 against the 2009 NCAA Tourney field. The Shockers are 0-3 against TCU, 0-2 against Oral Roberts, 0-1 against Oklahoma State, 0-2 against Kansas, 0-2 against Oklahoma, and 0-2 against Kansas State.
                    Wow.

Maybe we got all the losing out of the way already  ?

Here's some more stats from goshockers.com (PDF). It's 31 pages of stats & info about the Normal regional. Should help pass the time until gameday.
