  • For, Against, or Personal?

Some people have made it known in their posts about what they think. I'm curious to see a more scientific breakdown amongst the baseball fans.

I tried to include all answers that will at least pertain to at least 1 Shockernetter or more.

    ... No really, deuces.

I think with that specific of choices, you need a few more.

My vote would be for, give him another year or so. Anymore of this crap and he's gotta go.

That's why the question being asked is about the 'current' situation, not a future one.

Gene has won more games than ANY coach over the last 30 years. These people that are against Gene are not true Shocker fans. The next coach of the shockers will never be able to live up to standard that has been set.

This poll is a joke. Our coach IS Shocker Baseball. If any one thinks for one minute that they should tell Gene when it is time for him to retire, and I do mean retire, they are seriously deluded beyond recovery. Those of you that think we can just pick up a winning baseball coach---no problem have birds flying around in your brain cavity. Gene goes when Gene wants to go and the rest of us should pray to God that comes later rather than sooner. Nobody is better equipped to take our team forward than him. People are freaking out a little bit because we have had a bad season. OK. Get over it. We have good pitching and next year our position players will either improve over the summer or sit down next year and we will replace the ones that don't with ones that will. I got news for everyone. It is still the case that for better or for worse, Wichita State emphasizes baseball more than almost all of the schools around. We care about it more. I live in Lawrence and unless they are playing us their games are always sparsely populated even in good years and NO ONE is talking about the baseball Jayhawks. Maybe they should but they don't. That is not going to change just because we have a bad year. Now we have a baseball practice facility to go with our essentially superb facilities. What we should all do really is take a little personal responsibility and "ask not what the coaching staff can do for you but what you can do for the coaching staff and our Shockers and go to the d&$# games now in the tough times and show Gene appreciation for all of the greatness and great times that HE has brought to our city and University in the last 32 years. I hate to awake you but most people in the country know our city for the sole reason that they have heard of our Great baseball team and its coach. Note to Gene: Sorry Gene. You have been so successful that you have created a spoiled baby of a fanbase (comes with the territory) that in certain weak moments feels bigger than their britches. Thank you for coaching our team. Sorry we sometimes fail you but we are the luckiest fans in the country. Many more. Get ORU tonight!

Ashockalypse is correct, Gene is Shocker baseball and I think that he should stay until he decides to retire.

While I have some issues with him regarding his personal behavior, I do admire him for what he has done for the University and the program.

I have always said we should take the name of the slime / weasel car dealer off of the stadium and name it after Gene.
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

That part of Ashockalypse is mostly correct, but I have issues with the underlying principle that is essentially that one man - Gene Stephenson - is bigger that the program. Yes he built it to its current level, but give the boosters, benefactors, and student body over these many years some of the credit, too. It is their money that builds the facilities, not Gene's. Also, there are a host of players that did the job on the field. AFAIK, Gene hasn't ever thrown a pitch or hit a homer in a Shocker uniform. Those guys put up with Gene and his antics and deserve a bunch of credit for it. Greg Brummett, Eric Wedge, et. al. won the National Championship in '89, not Gene.

One more beef: "I hate to awake you but most people in the country know our city for the sole reason that they have heard of our Great baseball team and its coach." I call BS on that one. College baseball fans are such a minority of the population or more specifically a minority of sports fans, that I'll bet the Men's Basketball S16 appearance is more familiar than the Baseball program's success. Wichita can stand on its own, just ask Boeing, Cessna, Beech, Koch Engineering and Kirstie Alley.

I'll support Gene 100% until he decides to retire, but I think the program can and will flourish when he is gone if a high-profile coach replaces Gene because of the solid support of the loyal Shocker fan base, the player/alumni, and the benefactors.

                          Basketball Season Tix since '77-78 . . . . . . Baseball Season Tix since '88

I have been to a lot of states and always wear my Shocker gear and 9 times out of 10 if somebody says something to me about Wichita State, it is "They have a really good baseball program/team."

For what it is worth, it has been my experience that WSU is primarily recognized, if at all, for its baseball program – at least on the East Coast.
