For quite sometime now, we have been a "small-ball" team that refuses to play "small-ball." We do not have Carter, Stephenson, Standiford, Morman to name a few; we need to manufacture runs - at least try to.

Originally posted by SB ShockI really don't know why anybody was suprised about Coleman. It was clear in Omaha that his family was wanting him to go pro (as I watched his dad was beating the seats everytime Coleman struggled at the plate striking out twice or committing errors). He was drafted low because he was a signing risk because he had leverage as a sophmore. I thought he didn't get that great of deal (it at least was not a deal where the club was investing that much in him), but maybe he knew what was facing WSU and new he wasn't going to have any better year with who he would be playing around.
Yes, Dusty's goal was to be a professional baseball player, and his family clearly had those expectations as well.
That he signed last season was and should be a surprise to everyone, except after the fact it is clear why he did sign.
Dusty was drafted in the 28th freakin' round. After seeing his draft position, the Shox coaches should have had a reasonable expectation for Dusty to return as he is probably a legit 8th-10th round pick and would have improved his draft position greatly in the 2009 draft. Where the plan gets wrecked is that Dusty was reportedly given a $600,000 signing bonus by the Oakland A's. That amount of money is just sick for the 844th overall pick in the draft and way out of character for the A's. Dusty got the money (and more) than he would have gotten even if he waited until 2009 and been drafted in the top 10 rounds.
I don't begrudge Dusty one bit for taking that deal, but when the Shox broke camp after the 2008 season, they surely expected SS to be one hole in the order they didn't have to worry about.
Was it a surprise? You bet. Would Dusty being here have made a huge difference, maybe not, but think about an infield with Grimes at 3B and Coleman at SS. Hmmm.

Teams have down years it happens, it just hadn't happened to the Shox until this year. LSU misses the tournament in 2006 & 2007 has a great recruiting class and makes the CWS in 2008. In 2007 they go 29-26-1.
I know we live in a what have you done for me this second world, but I think there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we can get back to where we all expect us to be, and I firmly believe Gene and his staff can get us there, this season sucks and is frustrating but to think it is the total demise of the program to me is a little silly.THERE ARE FLOCKS OF BIRDS AND MANY A CAT ------ BUT ONLY ONE WUSHOCK!

Coleman offers more all-around potential than most shortstops in the 2008 draft. He's a versatile 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete who also starred as a quarterback and point guard in high school and has taken the mound on occasion for Wichita State. He has good strength and power potential for a shortstop, and he drew a lot of attention when he homered twice in three games at Long Beach State's unforgiving Blair Field early in the season. Coleman homered just four times in his next 50 games, however, as teams were more reluctant to challenge him. He'll need to cut down on his swing, do a better job of recognizing breaking pitches and tighten his strike zone to do damage on a more consistent basis. He's a solid-average runner with good instincts on the bases. Defensively, Coleman has smooth actions and a strong arm. He has been clocked as high as 92 mph and flashed an intriguing slider in his infrequent outings on the mound. Coleman's talent warrants a fourth- to sixth-round selection, but his extra leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore could scare teams off. If he returned to Wichita State and improved offensively, he could factor into the first three rounds of the 2009 draft.

It's kinda funny. This board seems to be more active when we're down than when we are good. Kinda strange. .Deuces Valley.

I will give some of you this, the one thing that is really bothering me is that the same mistakes are being made and guys do not seem to be learning from mistakes and making adjustments very well. That goes for the offense and the pitching staff.THERE ARE FLOCKS OF BIRDS AND MANY A CAT ------ BUT ONLY ONE WUSHOCK!

It seems like some of us have to make this argument for Gene and the baseball program every year.THERE ARE FLOCKS OF BIRDS AND MANY A CAT ------ BUT ONLY ONE WUSHOCK!

I just don't understand all the anti-Gene sentiments, especially for what he has built, and how quickly some people are ready to just give up on him and the program.
Mostly, I'd say that Gene's intensity and desire for perfection has rubbed-off on a lot of us and we expect the Shox to dominate year-in and year-out. The program and its fans are a 1000lb. gorilla that expect a heck of a lot out of the players and the coaches. We haven't had to deal with a total collapse in 31 years.
We're seeing a handful people on here becoming very negative on the program, I think the majority are prepared to let this season end and move on from here to the Shox normal level in the future.

Like all fan bases, we have our share of knowledgeable fans, morons, imbeciles and idiots… the morons, imbeciles and idiots tend to stand at the front of the line.

For the record, if Gregg took us to the Sweet 16 and then the next year fell off to the point where we finished near the bottom he'd get some criticization for poor recruiting efforts. Much like Turgeon did. It's one thing to not be at the same level each and every year, but to fall as much as you said Gregg would have people complaining and I'd be one of them. Recruiting is a HUGE part of college athletics. Not everyone is going to be a huge success, but you have to have people in place.
Again, I don't follow the baseball program that closely but think that the comparisson made was BS.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan
