  • Where's Hays?

It's about that time of the year and I haven't heard from him. He's the baseball expert and I'm looking forward to reading what he thinks of the upcoming season. Or, have I just not paid enough attention and he's been around?

He moved a year or two ago and doesn't have the chance to keep up as much as he would like to. I think he manages to make it to a few road games when we are closer to his current location but that's about it. He is missed. I have no doubt that he will be popping in here soon as the season nears. Not as much as I wish he would irregardless of his distance but so it goes.

In the middle of nowhere in western Kansas.

I thought he was in Chesterfield, MO. At least that what he shows on his profile.

I think it is somewhere in MO. I thought I remember him saying something about the St. Louis area.

Sorry, that was a poor geographical joke.

                Yo, I'm here.

What a pleasant surprise to be called out like that. Thank you.

I was home at Christmas time and hooked up with Damon Jones, Ryan's dad, and we talked for two and half hours over a burger at Freddies. Damon made me feel a lot more optimistic about the upcoming season. Based on his comments and some discussions I had with people last fall, I think our pitching will be young but deeply talented. We could easily have two Freshmen in the weekend rotation.

I can't speak to any of the new position players, but I definitely look for good years from Ryan and Clint, and I think Cody Lassley will finally break out this year. If Will Baez can step into the leadoff spot and be productive, our offense just might be OK too. Obviously the left side will be a big question, with new guys at short and third, but I'm optimistic that Chris O'Brien, Josh Rosecrans, or Taylor Gilmore will be at least serviceable at third. We're inexperienced at shortstop, but there is some potential there in Tyler Grimes and Taylor Brown.

I think the first half of the season could be a little rough, but I think we'll round into shape and compete for the Valley title on the backs of a deep pitching staff.

16 days until practice starts, 35 days till opening day. :-)

I wish I could go to the opening series in Florida but that's not going to happen, so it will be the home series against North Dakota State before I get my first glimpse of the new guys. I didn't make it for any of the fall series. In other words, I'm going to be getting my impressions from y'all, not the other way around.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.
