  • Make sure you have protection...

Baseball is not a contact sport. However, I've seen some bad injuries come from baseball.

So, what are some of the worst injuries you have ever seen from baseball?

I saw a catcher get caught by a cleat in his neck and there was just massive amounts of blood everywhere. It wasn't a bad injury (he was back the next day with 3 stitches), it just caught the wrong spot. GUSHING blood like out of a Tarantino movie.

At a local game, I saw a baserunner collide with the catcher and heard a loud snap. The catcher's leg was broken, with the bone sticking out of the uniform. What is that called...a compound fracture? Anyway, it reminded me of what happened to Joe Theisman.

During practice back in my Babe Ruth League days, a teammate slid into 2nd. But he kind of jumped into the air and as we sticking his legs out in front a cleat caught in the ground and basically snapped his leg above the ankle. I remember hearing it snap from the dugout.

The rehashing of his thoughts while he watched his life bleed away on the ice brought tears to the eyes of Clint Malarchuk a week or 2 after this gruesome injury.....the worst I have ever seen.

Pregame warmups for an American Legion game included live pitching from behind an L screen in the cage. The pitcher (my son) let his face come out from behind the screen. The batted ball hits him in the eye.

Complete orbital bowout with crushed sinuses. It scared the bejesus out of all of us. He had to play the rest of the year with a cage on a batting helmet. No permanent injuries.

I'd never seen the Malarchuck injury before. Quick action by the trainer probably saved his life, because he'd have bled out quick with a slash of the jugular like that.

In 1976, Steve Yeager of the Dodgers was struck in the neck with the barrel of a shattered bat while standing in the on deck circle - the blow crushed Yeager's esophagus. That injury was the advent of the neck protector for catchers.

Probably the worst injury seen by the most people was the career-ending compound fracture of Joe Theismann's leg in a Monday Night Football game in 1985. That one was sickening. Theismann's leg was hanging limp at an angle and the end of the broken bone was sticking through the skin. Lawrence Taylor took that one hard.

                      Shocker85,

Well, thanks for the graphic detail of what I only alluded to in an earlier post. As a 'skins fan (though NOT a fan of #7), I've tried really, really hard to block that out. Let's just say I felt worse for Taylor. Yeah, I know, that sounds bad, but Joe was/is a schmuck. Now, if that had happened to Monk or Green, for example, I just might forget I'm a lady. :-x

I've always thought maybe I'm a bad person for not feeling much sympathy of Joe when Taylor snapped his ankle. I've never been able to stand the guy.

theisman's injury was a tib-fib compound. Very gruesome and very dangerous both neurologically and vascularly.

I saw Max Montoya, who played for the Bengals, break his leg in a super bowl (I think it was at least) and have it completely twist around. Way too gruesome for the tv to have shown the replay as many times as they did.
