LOWELL IS PITCHER OF THE YEAR
A lefthander who has signed to play at Wichita State next season, Winfield senior Charlie Lowell was nearly unhittable every time he took the mound this spring for the Warriors. He went 8-1 with a 0.24 ERA and 129 strikeouts, with only 11 walks, in 58 innings of work. Opponents batted .084 against him.
Lowell struck out 17 in a one-hit shutout against Scott City, struck out 16 in a two-hit shutout against Orchard Farm and twice struck out 15 batters in a game this season.
The southpaw's lone loss was in the Class 3 quarterfinals against eventual state champ St. Dominic. He limited a high-scoring lineup to just one run on two hits, while striking out 11 and walking three in a complete-game effort.
Lowell was selected by the Texas Rangers in the draft's 27th round, No. 813 overall.
