  • Josh Workman

I was watching channel 3 sports last night and they reported that Workman will sign his professional contract. However, I have not seen any other verification of this anywhere else. Has anybody else heard this as well?

I agree, I would be very surprised if he is back in a Shocker uniform next season.

Man I'm suprised, as a 38th round pick I wouldn't think there is much to lose coming back for his senior year.

I wish him good luck and hope Gene has been keeping his powder dry, he's going to have to reload quickly or his '09 team will look like Evansville.

I agree. If he could stay healthy and steal a bunch of bases next year he could greatly improve his position.

He gains nothing by signing this year as a 38th rounder.

Um, well.....as a Junior with a year of eligibilty remaining, what he gains by signing this year is 'leverage' with which to negotiate. The draft 'round' is actually meaningless in this process.

As a Senior, there is no 'leverage' remaining.

The foolish thing would be to come back for another year, and put himself into a 'take it or leave it' situation, where 'leaving it' is no longer an option....

The best deal he's ever going to get is whatever is negotiated this year.

Hie's the age of a typical senior, too, right? If he has aspirations of playing pro-ball, he probably needs to make the jump now. He's already the age of a typical class-A player. Waiting another year would probably put him behind.

Were ready to reload with Watkins and Grimes.

Good Post. People get way to locked into round.

He has been at WSU for 4 years...maybe he has finished his degree? Maybe he wants to play pro ball and doesn't see any reason to start grad school without the ability to finish.

He already passed up signing last year to come back and improve his stock this year. I don't see any reason why someone can logically argue that it's going to get much better after a 5th season.

Josh was an average player for us, and didn't get to live up to his potental due to injuries. He has great speed but didn't steal too many bases. Wish him all the luck if he signs, but I think that Watkins or Grimes can provide the same numbers as freshman.

Do you really believe that they NEGOTIATE with a 38th rounder? Junior or not, when you go that low they don't really consider you a prospect anyway.

He is pretty much in a take it or leave it situation whether it is this year or next year. But maybe if he has a good senior season, a team will really want him.

I don't think he has anything to lose by coming back. Having said that, I think the Shox will be fine either way. But Josh may be better off personally if he comes back.

Well, not only do I believe it, that's EXACTLY what it is......

Every offer of a contract, regardless of a player's selection round, is subject to negotiation. For that matter, even undrafted players are made 'offers' which are negotiable. (Derek Schermerhorn, Phil Napolitan, etc.)

Do you normally sign contracts based simply on an initial offer? Or do you consider the offer and weigh your options?

If a guy is, in your opinion, "not a prospect" because of his draft position, then please tell me where the line is drawn for that. Is it the 10th round?.... the 20th? Please advise.....MLB could also use that information to quit wasting everyone's time drafting 'non-prospects' beyond that point.

Not only that, but the hundreds (or thousands) of guys who were drafted/signed under conditions like these are also clearly wasting their time playing in the minor or major leagues right now....So, somebody needs to let them in on this too.

Your denial of the process, based on some apparent belief that returning to play another year is automatically in a player's best interest unless they're a low-rounder, is not realistic.

I'm sure there are some negotiations, but the sticking points might be things like getting a George Foreman grill or a $100 WalMart gift card thrown in.

Maybe they aren't that trivial, but I bet it's close. I would guess that beyond the 15th round, high school picks are considered long-shots or tough signs, and college picks are organizational filler for the low (short season) minors.

When you consider that picks beyond the 6th round are made virtually every few seconds (less than a minute apart) there isn't a lot of consideration from the club making the pick. "Hey, we're short 2nd basemen and need one in Idaho Falls" - scans the list - "Josh Workman - Wichita State. Ok, pick him."

Obviously, I don't know if that's how it's really done, but I'm not sure how else they do it when it gets to those real late rounds.

lawmaker - Do you really think Josh has more leverage being a 38th round pick as a Jr than he would as a 15th round pick as a Sr? I doubt there is much difference either way but I really don't know? If he had a really good Sr year I think Josh could move up 20 rounds in the draft. Wouldn't he be further ahead? He may just want to move on due to his age, but I really can't see how he would be better off with regards to money as a 38th round Jr? Please explain.
