Interesting story on his draft. Sounds like we will be sweating this one out for awhile, but at least he didn't want 4th round money. That's encouraging.

    3rd round money ~ $250,000 to 300,000
    4th round money ~ $200,000 to 250,000
    5th round money ~ $168,000 to 155,000

Very little in that article is encouraging to me. I expect him to sign.

Hope he doesn't but it would surprise me to see him wearing black and yellow next year.

I see this situation as a very similar one to Shafer's in 2005 with the exception that the Red Sox might be a little more willing to go over $300k than Cleveland was.

I feel bad (but not too bad) for saying this, but I hope he has a rotten summer. :-)

Sometimes failure in the short run leads to big success in the long run. Think Mike Pelfrey. The dude signed for, what, $5.5 Million after three years with Brent?

Close Hays, but Pelfrey signed a 4 year 5.25 million dollar deal. His signing bonus was 3.5 million. He also gets about a 250k bonus for being on the 25 man roster this year and next. But what a lot of people forget about is he could have been making money those three years he was playing for WSU.

He would have been a first rounder (depends on who you talk to) out of high school. That is 3 years of money that he will never get back--probably would have been arbitration elgible by now.

Oh well I am glad he made the right decision to come to WSU!

He was picked in the 17th round. He should go much higher after three years at WSU.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

It doesn't really matter what round you are drafted in as much as how much money they are willing to invest. If the Red Sox are willing to go 2nd or 3rd round money, it's a pretty big statement as to how much attention and how much of a chance they are going to give him.

If teams pay over the slot allowance the get a "very nasty" letter from Selig. As you can see it has not affected the Tigers or Yankees in the past two drafts.

With their 4th round pick this year the Royals took a guys that will demand 1.5 million. We shall see.

7hottamales: I have to disagree. The round in which you are drafted sticks with you, independent of the money you receive. The road is much tougher for a 17th rounder than for a first rounder (like CG). A 17th round player can make the majors if he is good enough and gets some breaks but it is a very tough journey; the probability is that such a player will, at best, have a cup of coffee in the majors.

I already feel sorry for this kid. So much expectation, so little life experience. So glad he's not my son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, etc. The stage for failure has been pre-set.

I noticed that he is wearing a Sluggers shirt / hat. Does he play summer ball for the KC Sluggers or for one of Standiford's teams ?
