  • Shox vs. Seminoles - Game 2

Might as well get it started with this from a story on Warchant.com:

The Seminoles could be without starting shortstop Tony Delmonico, who sprained his ankle and needed four stitches in his shin in the top of the first inning. Delmonico had to jump for a throw to second and a sliding Ryan Jones came under him. Martin said it would be a "modern miracle" if Delmonico played Saturday.

I don't quite understand why, if he was able to come right back in, it would be a miracle to play Saturday.

Is it one of those things where adrenaline and immediacy makes it easier to play and once you rest it begins getting sore, swelling , etc.?

I hope he is able to play, but I guess at some point if you're not 100% you can become a liability for your team.

    Get well, Mr. Delmonico.

I don't understand the 15 minute delay, so he could get patched up.

If he was able to play then the delay was warranted. NCAA rules prohibit a player with a bleeding wound. So he had to get that bleeding stopped before he could take the field since the umps were informed he was going to go back in.

I think its the swelling issue with the ankle injury...but mostly I think its Mr. Martin setting things up whether he plays or not that its us against the world mentality....Marine Corp man down theory...win one for Tony. Not to mention I think he kind of has to with the kids Dad in the dugout. That being said...I think we would do the same thing in their shoes
1/16/2010 on the "Screw at the Q" HCGM... " Ive never seen a foul parade like that...If you would of let me know it was going to be a foul parade I would of brought a different team" .... "dont talk to me about fouls....Ive got to go back and look at some tape... I have some thoughts but I need to look at the tape and then I will have something very strong to say"

I've been reading the past posts on here for the last two days to catch up with everyone. I can't beleive I just found out about this site! Though I am new here, I have followed the Shox off and on in past years, mostly during postseason, except this year when I've been on board since the fall world series. Anyway, I just want to say that I have lived and died with every pitch, as I'm sure most of you have. I don't think I've ever felt safe with this team, but that's what makes them so exciting. And what's a few more grey hairs? I don't care if my hair is snow white tomorrow, if that means we won today. That being said, I admit that my shoe may go through the television if Womack is put in. Sorry. I really think it will be an automatic reflex. It's not personal.

Play good defense behind Aaron, keep hitting the ball like yesterday, and I really like our chances to close it out in two games.

Welcome, I recommend deep breathing techniques and the mantra "it's just a game" to allay the momentary emotion. It works for me in basketball

Thanks for the welcome and the good advice, DUShock. In my head I know it's just a game, but in my heart...aarrgghh.

Last season I really felt like we were playing with house money. As thrilled as I was with getting a regional, I'm still not certain we deserved it (at least on the field) and then making it past Arizona kinda seemed a bit fortunate. As much as the super set up for us, I never really felt good about it and UCI certainly was a tougher team in that spot.

As a fan I never feel entitled...I certainly want us to win and there are times I think we have a better chance than others to win. I don't feel house money this time. This team just has a different makeup. Bob Lutz said it perfectly in the paper this morning; they have "a certain confidence this team hasn't shown in a while. And by "in a while" I mean "years".

This group is different. I don't know if they get it done this weekend or not. I feel good about their chances but I feel better about the quality of young men that are churned out of our program. Win or lose, it is a great day and a damned proud one to be a Shocker.

                  Go get 'em guys!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great post DrWu. That confidence is SO important this time of the year.

I bet that ankle is pretty swollen this morning. Gonna be tough to play on it. Shortstop is honestly the only position we could not afford to lose. We have a capable back-up at every position but shortstop. You look at it and think, "Well Delmonico has 27 errors, you're not missing much." Even though Tony has struggled fielding the ball this year he has been a huge part of our line-up and still brings confidence to our shaky defense (I know thats hard to believe with a guy with 27 errors).

I expect to see Stephen Cardullo there today. He has played a few innings at short this year (Yeah I know).

I think, and this is pure unadulterated opinion on my part, supported by nothing more than observation, is that Gene has taken a different attitude in this post season. It started last spring but I think he's gone further this year. He seems more relaxed and genuinely enjoying the experience. The guys are playing more relaxed and letting their ability shine through. We are playing closer to our "potential" than we have in years past.

It was a characteristic I've admired about the Oregon State coach, (and) Horton, who was at Cal State Fullerton, and Augie Garrido, in that they could stay relaxed, and thereby keep their players relaxed, even in games that would have most coaches pacing the dugout a nervous wreck. Whether Gene can maintain that calm(er) demeanor, is the question, but already this year I think he's taken it further than he ever has before. It's been said that teams in the past played well DESPITE Gene. I think maybe this year Gene deserves some of the credit for it.

And then again, I could be all, and I mean ALL, wet. I think Gene would be the first to say he has nothing to do with it, that it's all because of the players and the tremendous leadership we have this year, that he's just watching the game.

That is not hard for us Shocker fans to believe at all. Our SS has made 17 errors but many of those were by getting to balls that most SS wouldn't have even got a glove on. I hope he is able to play, but I agree it will be very sore today. He is a gamer for getting stiches and getting wrapped and coming back to finish the game!
