What about good hitting versus average pitching? Don't underestimate our offense's ability to keep us in the game against FSU.

no kidding, our offense hasn't been a slouch lately either....that should help keep the pressure on FSU

A bit on Kohl Nanney ...

His stats look pretty decent, but there are two huge (inter-related) concerns.

#1) He has 10 wild pitches in only 32 innings. He doesn't have COMMAND of his breaking ball and frequently buries it way out in front of the plate, giving Weber NO CHANCE at blocking it. I also wouldn't be surprised if Weber's 3 PB are mostly if not all with Nanney on the mound, too.

#2) Inherited runners score at a high rate vs. Nanney. I can't find a stat for this and don't have time to do the research, but when you're giving up 10-12 extra bases (in just 32 innings) via the WP or PB, you're not making the other team earn anything. This is totally unacceptable vs. the NCAA tournament caliber competition - they'll make you pay big time.

On the plus side, I think Nanney could be very effective against a big hitting team like FSU. His breaking ball and change-up can be NASTY and have made a bunch of hitters look silly this year. I think an effective strategy would be to use him when the tying run is still on-deck, be it when the Shox have a decent lead or especially starting an inning when he won't be hurt if he throws one by Weber.

Nanney has been very good at times, but just plain bad, too. At some point, he will be needed so lets hope the "Good Kohl" is available.

While FSU's pitching gave up a lot of runs this weekend, it is relatively deep and has a handful of starters who are capable of pulling out great starts. I am not sure that last week's results are indicative of what FSU's staff is truly capable. I also don't expect Wichita State not to produce. I think this will be a fun, competitive weekend.

I think Musgrave will have a very good outing. His change up will have FSU way off balance! The kid from Bucknel threw 84 to 85, kept them off balance and shut them out. I think FSU has seen alot of power arms all season and have a hard time adjusting to pitchers instead of throwers.

Good point. It will be interesting to see. One thing is for certain Musgrave and Shafer generally have unique ability at the college level to locate 3 pitches for strikes.

I'm not sure pitching depth plays a major factor in 3-game series.

I don't know about that Boston. Look at Arizona vs Miami tonight. They used a lot of pitchers. For that matter, we used a few ourselves. Sure, it doesn't matter as much, but it's still a consideration...

I even heard the ESPN people say something about the good pitching beat the good hitting today.

I kind of have to wonder what kind of pitching FSU's schedule offers. Does it offer up 3 pitchers like we have for a weekend, or just one?

Do you mean did FSU's schedule have them facing 3 starters with the quality we have in our three starters?

Honey, the only schools that faced that kind of quality pitching are the ones that we played :)

I'm sure north carolina would argue that, and after the last two days, a host of other pitching staffs would as well. At least we are measuring ourselves.

Well I guess that settles that debate. FSU's good hitting destroyed our good on occasion pitching.

I wouldn't call any pitching this weekend 'good'.

If we would have brought our 'good' stuff, then we would've taken this thing. As it is, we didn't bring it.

                              ... No really, deuces.

That's what great hitting can do to good pitching.

Give them credit. Just because people like to throw little cliches around like good pitching beats good hitting doesn't make them 100% true. We do have good pitching. We just don't have the plus plus stuff that can beat a line up full of guys that can get extremely deep in counts and drive secondary pitches.
