  • GOOD PITCHING VS. GOOD HITTING

The tried and true baseball axiom is that good pitching will beat good hitting. I am going to suggest that Florida state is a very good hitting team and I don't expect much argument. The question that will be answered this weekend is, how good is our pitching?

We don't have a lot of data in regards to our big 3 vs. high caliber hitting.

I truly have no idea how Musgrave will fare, has he had any outings against teams of this caliber?

Schafer is a little different story, while osu is not as good a hitting team as fsu, he did a marvelous job in the regional and looks good enough to keep us competitive in that game.

Capra on the other hand, must rise to the challenge and control 3 pitches.
another performance where he can't mix it up could be disastorous.

The bullpen, frankly our starters must go deep into the game, I believe Hoch can be effective, Mckeever possibly, but after that I don't have much faith.

In the end the old axiom should hold true, if we are as good as we hope we should advance, if not we will at least have been able to measure ourselves, and that is what competition is all about.

    GOOD LUCK SHOCKERS.

Typically speaking, I would agree good pitching beats good hitting. However, I have a concern with Musgrave. He's a fly ball pitcher and in that small ballpark, particularly right field, this may work against him. It did during the TCU game when some fly balls carried out of the park.

Also, I think our pitchers have to be perfect 100 percent of the time, IMO, FSU is too good of a hitting team not to punish a mistake pitch. I feel Shafer will perform well, he can get a lot hitters to ground out - let's hope CG and DC can field the balls well given their poor fielding PCT.

Capra, well, I think he is capable of shutting down FSU if the situation arises, but we will see if you factor in his last 6 starts.

If Musgrave can give us a good outing tomorrow - and it's a big if - I like our chances with Shafer.

Is there a reason to trust just Hoch and (based on one recent outing) McKeever, but not trust Nanney? His ERA is 3 runs less than Hoch's. Am I missing something?

Not that I am aware of. I think Nanney will pitch this weekend.

Great post William. I know the prevailing school of thought is to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Personally, I'm expecting the best and if the worst happens, so what? I'm still going to wake up in the morning and I'm still going to proud to be a supporter of WSU baseball.

This team is talented, prepared and playing with confidence again. They don't have the flash of FSU but they have heart and grit.

2 straight years of being in the Super Regionals.

Good Luck and go get 'em Shox!

              It is a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must be and I must be as well. I was very surprised he didn't get the call against OSU in the 7th with a runner on first and Mercer coming up. Maybe something is wrong that we don't know about.

It is possible that they wanted to save him in case of a second championship game.

I have given this coaching staff and fanbase alot of grief over the years because I don't believe in putting the program on a pedastal that doesn't produce like a program that should be on a pedastal. By that I mean having success in the postseason against the best teams, throwing their best pitchers, under pressure. That being said the tide is turning in regards of results, which is what I base my opinions on. Two super regional appearances in a row is a move in the right direction, the next step is to win one, maybe this year maybe next, as long as progress is being made I'm not in that big a hurry. At this level of play you win some and you lose some, very few teams are dominant, and at this point after 10 years I am just excited as hell to be in the mix again.

I hope we win next year, because getting to a super regional next year is probably going to be pretty tough with all that we are losing.

I'm probably wrong, but I don't think Nanney s stuff matches up well with fsu. I like Hochs curve against them. I'm afraid Nanney gets lit, I really don't trust anybody but the big 3 and Logan against these guys, they scare me even with the lights on.
