Mike Pelfrey enters Thursday’s start opposite Rutgers product Jason Bergmann coming off what may have been his best outing this season. In Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader, Pelfrey limited Cincinnati to two runs and eight hits in six innings while walking a season-low one batter.
“It was me being aggressive and attacking the strike zone, which is what I need to do,” Pelfrey said. “I think for the most part I did a good job of keeping the ball down. If I do those two things, I think I’m going to be successful.”
Pelfrey ditched his mouthpiece for the first time in his pro career with the nudging of team brass for that outing against the Reds. He intends to go without it against Thursday. He has worn the mouth guard because of a jaw misalignment stemming from when he was hit with a line drive while competing for Team USA in Asia as a collegian.
In attendance for today’s matinee will be three of Pelfrey’s college buddies – former Wichita State teammates Brandon Hall and Kenny Waddell and aspiring lawyer Joe Niederee. They’re spending the entire weekend at Pelfrey’s apartment.
“Mike Pelfrey’s only three friends on Earth,” Wise kidded him.
Countered Pelfrey later to a shirtless Wise: “You think you can mix in a bench press?”

“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

After today's loss, I'm glad he had friends in town to go drinking with.

Actually he went down to Trenton to see Muich play for Trenton and KJ happened to be in town also.
