True. But everyone has to deal with it.

Players who have all five tools are going to be very hard to get to come to college because the pro teams will be after them directly out of high school. Those aren't the type of players that 7hot and myself are talking about. We are saying that Gene needs to start looking harder for players that only have maybe two or three of the five tools, but it just so happens that one of those is the ability to consistently center the ball on the barrell of the bat. They don't have to be quick or have a great arm or even be great defensively. You stick those guys in the DH position or put them at 1st or in left field.

It's truly not that difficult. It's pretty easy to identify who is a top notch pro prospect and who isn't. People can give lawmaker crap all they want, but he basically told us last year the day they committed who was realistic and who wasn't. Maybe I'm wrong, but I strongly suspect that he doesn't have too much rare access to info on our recruits beyond BA and possibly speaking to a couple of scouts.

The true prevailing thesis the A's live by is identifying and taking advantage of inefficient markets for talent and buying the traits that are being undervalued and selling the ones that are overvalued. Being a college program we can't sell talent, but we can certainly figure out where the inefficiencies exist. One clue is that they certainly don't seem to exist for us in the market for toolsy players. It's hard to compete with $$$ and our window of opportunity to coach up is evidently not long enough to accommodate our ability to coach up.
