This is a great philosophical question....In a highly competitive world, how much does past performance dictate that you receive tenure regardless of whether the expectations for future success would be greater under a different alternative or not?

If there are better people for the Penn State job going forward, should Joe Pa be allowed to stay until death? At what cost to the long run prospects of PSU football?

How much should a fan base be willing to sacrifice in order to appease someone whose best days are behind them?

The person who I think should be the #1 candidate for the job is probably a season or two away from being in the best position to consider leaving his current job at Charlotte.
Wow, I sure hope we'd have our sights set higher than Loren Hibbs.

He's been at Charlotte since 1992 and in that time has has been to the NCAA tournament a grand total of 3 times, and holds a 2-4 record there. Let's be honest, if Hibbs didn't have strong connections to our program, he wouldn't even be a blip on the radar for a coaching search.

I'm sorry, but if he is guilty of these charges he does not deserve to hold the position of head coach at my alma mater. I have principles and will not give any more money in the form of tickets if the administration does not sack up and let a woman stalker go. If these charges are true I am very disappointed in Gene.
I had Martin explain to me three times what he got arrested for because it sounds an awful lot like what I do here every day.

There is a difference between criticism and hate. As soon as people realized basketball was a lost season, the Turg hate intensified. If Gregg goes 21-11, does Turg get as much hateful heat? Of course not. People wanted -- needed to blame someone. They will do the same thing to Gene.

I wonder, perhaps Gene thought it was time to leave when he put on that university of oklahoma jersey? Honestly I don't know but I do wonder if he's sticking around simply because he can.

I think there's a chance you are mistaking the vocal minority as representing the whole. You have to realize that most on here are not completely typical of the WSU fanbase.

In general, I think most fans have kept in perspective what MT did for the basketball program and I feel even stronger that most will always understand what Gene Stephenson did for the baseball program.

                Hot,

I am not trying to paint with a broad bush. My fear is the vocal minority will infest itself and the majority will be swayed to say "well...maybe". And you are right, they don't represent the typical WSU fan which is why their perspectives need to be given the credit it deserves: none.

I think this is a pretty big assumption. There have been countless examples of highly accomplished people that are the last to realize that it's time to go. Unfortunately it often gets rather ugly.

Sacrifice? I guess making the ncaa tournament every year and hosting a super regional last year is a sacrifice.

I wish our basketball coach would allow us to sacrifice this much.

I am very disappointed about the 3 straight losses (mad too), but this talk about Gene should go is just plain crazy.

I hope Gene coaches at WSU for another 10 years or more.

Perhaps you have a difficult time understanding the concept of a philosophical question...no where in there did I make any value judgments. That's way to subjective to keep from clouding the point.

How much indeed. A very difficult question to answer even if all you are considering is the on field performance. The off-field issues only add to the diffiuculty. As for as on the field performance, I don't think we are close to the point of being able to justify Gene's termination.

As far as, the off the field issues we will have to see how that plays out, but it is not like Gene (to my knowldedge) has been a chronic problem.
Surely, a person that has contributed what Geme has deserves a chance to apologize and to take corrective action.

Actually, I wouldn't think hiring a head coach at WSU for baseball would be too terribly difficult. There should be a list a mile long of people that would love to be in control of this program. The difficult part of it would be sorting through the many candidates, but once that was done, it should be pretty easy.
I think it would be even easier than that: Simple solution: Kemnitz.

Assuming Brent wants to be a head coach and not simply a pitching specialist. Remember, he progably could have stayed behind and taken the head job when Gene left for OU, but chose to go with Gene instead.

Brent probably could have had any number of head coaching jobs over the years if that's really what he wanted to do.

So far, I've seen no indication that Brent wants to be the head guy at WSU or anywhere else for that matter.

I agree, Brent has consistently had one of the best pitching staffs since he has been at WSU, I don't think there's any doubt he wants to be a pitching coach only, and not a head coach.
