Originally posted by WuDrWuI don't pretend to know much about this situation but to me this was about a payday & nothing more. Happily I do not know this person because I like to think I am not a generally mean individual and if I did run into her I imagine the greeting would be profanity laced. Mistakes were undoubtedly made all involved, but if there is karma, the woman will choke on the money.
I have known Gene Stephenson since he was in high school and he was an arrogant jock even then. He has always treated his wife poorly and this behavior has just gotten worse with the years. I sincerely hope that he does learn from this mistake for the sake of his children and grandchildren. My God, if anyone deserves your scorn it is GS. I suggest you stick to baseball only with him. You will be much happier if you don't know the real man. It is true, ignorance can be bliss.

The Eagle's editorial is nothing but a CHEAP SHOT at Wichita State University and a baseball coach who is in the history books as one of the best in NCAA history. The court system has resolved this disagreement. None of us know the FACTS and only two people know the facts and they disagree on what happened. For the newspaper to bring it up the way they did this morning is a attack on WSU, WSU Athlethics, and Gene. WSU and this baseball program has created more value for this community than the Eagle ever has or ever will.GO SHOX!

Here, here!
Most highly successful I've met are supremely arrogant. It comes with the territory. I have had many, many run ins with Gene....he has never been anything less than polite and cordial and grateful for my support and interest. I've heard the unending stories of Gene's demeanor.....I don't doubt it, but I've rarely seen a bad example of it.
Common sense tells me this......there was a parting of the ways....money fixed the problem.....money was the reason for the problem. Gene has it, and she wanted it.

It is true that Gene is a good baseball coach and a real charmer when he wants to be. I would be willing to bet though, that if you were a woman who was not interested in him, and he came on to you repeatedly anyway, over the course of several months, you would feel differently about him. I can only say that I am very close to the situation (on his side of the house) and money was not the reason for the problem. It is true however, that he used his money to fix the mess he made. Only his arrogance kept him from settling sooner. Rich people buy their way out of messes all the time! Nothing new.

The blind adulation for GS just because of his success in college baseball is hard to understand. That success doesn't excuse his personal behavior and dragging his family and WSU fans through the mud with him. If people would hold him, and others like him, accountable for their actions, maybe they would think twice before they misbehave so badly. It starts young, though. We idolize athletes and let them get away with behavior we would never accept from anyone else. It's just too bad.
Not trying to 'win' with Dr. Wu, just setting the record straight.

Originally posted by Queen of DiamondsI am not full of hate or bitter. I am pretty disgusted with everyone on this site trashing a woman who tried to stand up for herself. The name calling is pretty bad. I've been watching it for months now.
Which is worse? The "name calling" you reference or the comments made here about SIU's "that's not a foul" defense?
What about UNI's Coleman? The fans of many other MVC baseball teams? It is in the nature of a sports board to be critical and "rag" on people. I don't remember the comments about this "woman who tried to stand up for herself" but I don't recall that they were that bad. (I could go back and look but it's over and I don't really care.)Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

The problem as I see it is we respect GS for what he has done on the field, as we should. That doesn't mean he is great and wonderful off the field. I think the good Dr said in an earlier post that most extremely successful people are difficult in their personal lives. Anyone close to the situation knows that GS is far from perfect off the field. His antics have finally caught up with him in the public eye.
My question is this? He didn't break any laws, so do we care about his personal life other than the fact the man screwed up? Does this effect the product that he has put on the field over the last 30 years? Will it effect the product over the next 5 or 10 years?
How many of us want all of the intimate details of our personal life known at our place of work? Granted he is more of a public figure, but he is paid to win baseball games and he does very well at that. Did this tarnish the image of the University? I think he was very smart to settle...
